Transformed :: A Suitcase

cat dog pet bet DIY make your own vintage suitcase thrift

Hi there! Claire here, to bring you our latest before-and-after of…a pet bed! Two weeks ago, I polled you guys on which pet bed (out of 3 choices) I should create for my next DIY post. Thanks to your wonderful comments and ideas, I decided to create a combination of bed #1 and bed #3! Although Monte wanted a bed for himself, he was a little too large to fit into a suitcase, so I decided to make the perfect perch for my cat, Cat! It’s black and white, just like her, with a pop of color that adds a splash of fun. Keep reading to learn how I made this totally do-able project…

  • old suitcase (I found one at my favorite vintage store, Room Service)
  • 4 salvaged furniture legs from Etsy
  • 1″ wide painter’s tape
  • white & black spray paint
  • drill
  • pillow
  • Cat’s favorite blanky

  1. Tape off the top of the suitcase in any pattern/color design you want. (Inspired by the stitching in my suitcase I made mine chevron pattern.)
  2. Spray the suitcase with one color, let it dry, tape off the sprayed pattern, and repeat.
  3. Drill holes in the bottom for the legs and attach.
  4. Place pillow & blanket in the bottom.
  5. Add any toys or decorations to make it personal (I painted my cat’s name, Cat, onto a small board for a pop of color, and added her gold toy moose!)
  6. Set it up and let them discover and enjoy! (Cat wasn’t so sure it was going to be better than my lap…)

Too cool! I may want one myself – I do have a birthday coming soon. And no, Monte and I are not working together!

This is darling! I so want to make one for my miniature poodle now. I think he’s probably too heavy, but perhaps I can still make one just in case he decides to shed a few pounds.

What a sweet cat you have.
I have a few thrifted suitcases, what a great idea to add legs and make it a kitty bed.

LOVE IT! Makes me wish I could fit a golden retriever in a piece of luggage and make him a cozy bed too! Great job and thanks for the plug.

This is so adorable. How do you keep the lid from closing when the animal jumps in?

    Thanks Kathy!

My hinge locks once it is open, but if yours doesn’t then I would suggest buying two metal straps and mounting them with screws on the inside of the suitcase (one on each side).
