Adventures in Capsule Wardrobing

By Jen Pinkston

Back in March I played around with the idea of a capsule wardrobe — a limited number of clothes and shoes that you mix and match for a finite amount of time. The idea is that it makes getting dressed easier, and simplifies this one part of your life by getting rid of the unnecessary. Admittedly, I embarked on the experience kind of impulsively, and it wasn’t long before life got chaotic and I was back to my old dressing ways. However! My short-lived experiment made enough of an impact that I knew I needed to come back to it when I had the time to do it right — which I finally did two weeks ago! (You can read the full story and see everything I kept here.) You would be so surprised at how many different looks you can create with just 36 pieces, and this look is the first of many from my early summer capsule wardrobe. I love this particular one because of it’s simplicity. You can never go wrong with a striped cotton dress, and I have been finding all kinds of things to wear with this rust cardigan that I picked up on super sale at Madewell (to think I almost didn’t buy it!)

When I was choosing each piece to keep in this season’s capsule wardrobe, I really had to think about my life and what I dress for each day. This particular look is something I would wear on set when styling, because it’s comfortable enough to work in and the heels are a manageable height. I have been collecting heels like these since having Parker and they’re amazing! You can wear them all day without cringing at each step. And when I’m not working, I would wear this to the farmers market or to Echo Park Lake with Parker for the afternoon.

So, there ya go!  The first of my capsule looks in the books.  What do you think?  Could you handle two or three months rotating the same clothes?  Have you tried it already?  I’m dying to know what other people’s experiences have been!
