How to use airbrush foundation

You guys know I’m a bit of a beauty product junkie, and for the most part, I’ve tried it all. Sheet masks, color-correcting primers, setting sprays, contouring sticks, plumping lip glosses; you name it, it’s probably been in my makeup drawer at one time or another. The one makeup innovation I’d never tried? Airbrush foundation. I’d occasionally hear friends mention they’d had it done for a special occasion, but assumed the at-home versions were hard to use or too clunky to fit in a drawer. But recently, Luminess Air offered to send me their airbrush makeup system to try out, so I figured, why not?

I invited my fellow beauty product fanatic friend (and photographer) Kristen to come over and take photos while we figured out how to use it. Surprise: there was really nothing to figure out. You plug in the palm-sized device, put a few drops of foundation into the stylus, press an “on” button then gently pull back on the throttle while a fine barely-perceptible mist kisses your face.

The mist was so subtle that I almost thought nothing was happening, but when I opened my eyes, surprise again! My skin looked flawless. I’d worried that I needed to cover up my hair and clothes so the foundation didn’t spray onto them, but somehow, magically, there wasn’t a trace.

Luminous Air calls theirs a makeup “system” because foundation is only the tip of the iceberg. There are tiny bottles for primer, blush, and “glow”, so you can really do your entire makeup without touching your face with a brush or your fingers (which I always fear spread bacteria onto my skin.) I’m a big primer person, so I’ve been using this one before foundation on days when I have an extra minute, and it really does help my makeup go on smoothly and stay all day.

I tried the blush next, and while it did take a bit more control and practice, once I figured out how to concentrate the mist onto the apples of my cheeks, it was easy breezy. As with the foundation, the key to a natural look is holding the airbrush between 6 – 8 inches from my face and keeping my hand constantly moving in a circular motion to that the application is light and flawless.

And since summer is on the horizon, I even experimented with spraying a bit of the glow on my chest for a subtle, shimmery tank top-ready result.

Final verdict? I’m obsessed. Not only because of the naturally flawless finish the Airbrush provides, but also because of how quickly I can apply foundation now — literally, 30 seconds flat. If any of you guys are thinking about giving it a try, I can’t recommend it highly enough, and Luminess Air is offering our readers an exclusive discount code: at checkout, use Camille20 for 20% off your purchase!
