Fall’s Best New Mascaras

By Tara Thompson Rasmus

If you’re like me, you usually slap on your mascara as the last step in your beauty routine without thinking twice. While we may swap out eyeshadows and lip products according to our moods and the changing seasons, mascara is one of those old faithful products that can remain static in our makeup bags once we find one that does the job. But, where’s the fun in that?

In the fall, when we’re often looking to update and/or polish our beauty looks, updating your mascara can actually be a small detail that makes a huge difference. It’s incredible how much sophisticated formulas can become in even a few months; so, if your current mascara hasn’t really been doing the trick lately, here’s your chance to branch out and take some new lash lacquer for a test drive. Whether you prefer all-natural, waterproof, or crazy-dramatic formulas, there’s a new pick out there for you — better get ready to bat ‘em, girl!

The More, The Merrier

If you crave the illusion of thicker, denser, fuller lashes, look no farther than this turbo-charged version of L’Oreal Paris Voluminous (one of the best volumizing mascaras of all time, in my opinion). L’Oreal’s signature Millionizer brush manages to thicken lashes while leaving them perfectly defined, meaning that you can build luscious fringe quickly, without creating a mess.

L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Excess Mascara

Extended Run

If fluttering length is what you desire, this brand-new pick by Stila will rock your world. I learned the power of this oversized tube of goodness backstage at Fashion Week this September, when makeup artist Sarah Lucero whipped it out and started applying it to my fringe while I was interviewing her. I was pleasantly surprised when I looked in the mirror and saw that Ms. Lucero had seriously doubled the length of my lashes with only a couple of swipes. I sense some big things for this newcomer.

Good Clean Fun

If you prefer to eschew any sketchy chemicals in your products (probably a good idea, especially when it comes to your eye area), I’d recommend this totally natural pick from W3ll People. It separates and defines each lash flawlessly, all without toxins like petroleum, coal tar, aluminum, and parabens that are often found in mascaras.

The Expressionist Bio-Extreme Mascara

Très Sportif

If you’re a sporty type (or if you, like me, seem to end up with mascara smudges under your eyes no matter what you do), it might be worth tossing your regular mascara formula for one of the new waterproof formulas that are on the market. This pick by Eyeko is seriously innovative; it boasts a gel formula that lasts for 12 hours, and it can even be reapplied without clumping. Unlike many waterproof mascaras than can dry out your lashes, this pick packs in collagen and vitamin E to soften and nourish while it creates an enviable fringe.

Eyeko Sport Waterproof Mascara

Clearly Defined

If clumps are the bane of your lash-related existence, this high-tech fringe-enhancer is about to rock your world — I mean, just look at that brush! This two-in-one swiper can be used horizontally, like a normal mascara brush, or you can use the tip  vertically to define individual lashes. Calling all perfectionistic types: I may have just found your mascara soulmate.

Colorful Personality

If you thought that colored mascara was something that you left behind in the seventh grade along with orthodontic rubber bands and gel pens, well, I don’t blame you. But, try to trust me when I say that now is the time to reconsider. No, you don’t have to try the pink — but, a swipe of the royal-blue Inky Six or deep-eggplant Cor Blimey shades on lashes will brighten your eyes like nobody’s business. And, for those of you that are more adventurous, can’t you picture how cool the aqua would look on lower lashes? You can, I can tell.

Butter London Wink Mascara in British Racing Green

Thrill Seeker

Please excuse me getting a little saucy here, but have you ever seen a mascara that looked so, well…kinky? Yeah, me neither — which is why I was so intrigued by this funky tube of inky goodness. That cool twisted wand is actually patented; the curve mixes the mascara with each twist to ensure that the formula stays fresh. The elastomer-molded brush ensures that even superfine or short lashes are evenly coated, for defined, glossy black lashes that are seriously dramatic.
