Matte Lips for Fall

By Tara Thompson Rasmus

It’s easy to get caught up in the “back-to-school fever” this time of year and be convinced that you need bangs, a new wardrobe, and even a new routine—but in my mind, little seasonal tweaks can make a big difference (and cost a lot less money!). Enter: lip color. There are few makeup products that can so dramatically change your look and make you feel like you have a whole new lease on life. This fall, I’m really feeling matte lipstick, for two reasons: first, it’s totally on-trend and flattering. Second, it actually lasts, which is super-key when I’m running around after my (newly crawling!) baby son all day. Check out my picks for the best new matte lipsticks, and let me know what fall updates you have planned for your look this year!

Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain from Yves Saint Laurent Beaute

Seriously saturated matte color plus a weightless feel AND that luxurious YSL scent? Yes, please.

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Lip Color

Featuring a narrow applicator for precise applications, this lipstick/stain hybrid lasts up to 16 hours. The shade Lover is the perfect fall rose shade, in my humble opinion.

Matte Lipstick from Anastasia Beverly Hills

With a super-smooth finish, this lipstick comes in a literal rainbow of shades (there’s even a green for the super-bold ladies out there), but I think my favorite for this fall has to be Brandy, a warm cocoa shade.

Velvet Matte Lip Colour by Christian Louboutin

If you’re looking to treat yourself this fall, what better way than with this ultra-luxe lippie? If you’re looking for a great day-to-day shade, I love the peachy-pink Rococotte, but if you want to REALLY go for it (and why not?), I’d give the violet-wine Very Prive a try. Just think how it’ll dress up all of your basic gray sweaters!

Crushed Lip Color from Bobbi Brown

The beauty world has gone nuts for this new offering from Bobbi Brown, and for good reason: right from the tube, it creates that sexy popsicle-stained look, without the blotting. Regal would be a lovely sheer red for fall weekends.

Guerlain Intense Liquid Matte Creamy Velvet Lipcolour

For a special night out when your lips need to BRING IT, this creamy liquid lipstick won’t disappoint. If you choose a classic deep red like Addictive Burgundy, I guarantee that it’ll take you right through holiday party season.

Matte Créme Lip Crayon from Bite Beauty

Featuring orange peel wax (seriously!) this matte crayon is creamy and moisturizing, yet totally stays put. I think Glacé, a dusty mauve, feels super-fresh—and would look lovely on a wide variety of skin tones.
