The Men’s Fragrances We Secretly Want for Ourselves

By Tara Thompson Rasmus

Who says every woman wants to smell like a vanilla cupcake? Ok, I’m being cheeky here, but really: sometimes I feel that if I have to smell one more achingly sweet scented product, I’m going to lose it. Listen, there’s nothing wrong with vanilla, or sweet scents in general, if that’s what you like. But, if the perfumes and body products on the women’s side of the fragrance bar are leaving you cold (or, ahem, a little nauseous), I’d like to challenge you to ditch female-focused fragrances entirely and take a whiff of the men’s side of the store.

Sure, there is a typical “man scent” used in many products that can be just as off-putting as that generic baked-good perfume, but you’d be surprised by how many modern men’s colognes make perfect unisex scents. I’ve rounded up some masculine fragrances that fit the bill; let me know if you have any favorites that you steal from your guy on the regular!

Citron D’Erable Cologne Absolue Spray

Especially welcome right now: this warm, sunny fragrance features lemon and mandarin, but eucalyptus, maple and cedarwood make it complex enough for winter.

Histoires De Parfums Noir Patchouli

This dark and mysterious fragrance blends patchouli with cardamom and musk for an exotic and warm finish.

Tom Ford Azure Lime Eau de Parfum Vaporisateur

Comme des Garçons always seems to get that unisex thing right, and this bracing yet wearable scent is no exception.

Blue Cedrat Eau de Parfum

Comme des Garçons always seems to get that unisex thing right, and this bracing yet wearable scent is no exception.

Bigarade Concentree

Focused on a singular note of bitter citrus, this refreshing fragrance is like a good Negroni in a bottle.

Odin New York 08 Seylon

This fresh scent is like a love letter to the wild vetiver found in Sri Lanka.

Dude No. 1 by MCMC

This scent is one of my favorites of all time: a perfect mix of woods, spicy peppercorns and ginger, plus a hint of Moroccan rose makes this preservative-free cologne truly wearable (and majorly sexy!) for both genders.
