Polka Dot Sixties-Inspired Outfit styling by Jen Pinkston | Photo by Mary Costa for Camille Styles

Have you all noticed the sixties influence in fashion this season? Everywhere you look there are oversized buttons, mod shifts, and cute peter pan collars, and there was no greater indication of the trend than this year’s Oscar red carpet scene. Anne Hathaway’s studded Miu Miu number and Naomi Watts’ Paco Rabonne-esque metallic stunner were both perfectly reminiscent of the bygone decade, and the notion has trickled all the way down to street styling. Now that we’re well into spring, the sixties are still in full swing!

I fell in love the minute I saw this J. Crew polka dot number! (They seriously have the best mod dresses right now!) In the evenings I wear it on it’s own with a bright pump and clutch, but this particular day I added this chambray peter-pan collar shirt to make the look a little more interesting. I’m a big fan of a preppy collar! It was still in need of a little color, though, so I added this electric blue necklace (also J. Crew) and ring by Audra’s Details.

Mod dresses can be a particularly flattering silhouette.  Make sure that the bust, neckline, and shoulders fit snugly, though, so the whole look doesn’t appear ill-fitting.

We photographed this look on a day when I was prepping for a fitting, and knew that a heel just wouldn’t cut it. I bought these flats recently and can’t stop wearing them! I love the stripes — and that I can be on my feet all day without remorse.

Are you into the sixties style?  Have you purchased anything sixties-esque recently that we should know about?  I just bought a pair of printed cigarette pants that I can totally picture my grandmother wearing in her Ft. Walton Beach days in the sixties!

  2. Very cute, especially with the stripes! Also, I like your hair style! Is the length easy to maintain?

Thanks, Julia! I definitely have to get my hair trimmed more often than when it was long because the cut is so blunt. I should really go every 3-4 but honestly it’s usually more like 6. The upside is that it’s super quick and easy to style!

  3. Loving this combo of polka dots and chambray. I have to say though, Jen, you look adorable is everything you style! x

  4. Very cute dress! Love the 60′s vibe, I have tons of great 60′s jewelry on my website, perfect way to add just a little vintage to any outfit.

  6. I LOVE this look, Jen! Sixties is probably my favorite era, since the clothes were so feminine and chic! I’m in love with polka dots, too, so this dress is a match made in heaven :) Love the adorable chambray peeking from under the dress! Fabulous styling, as always!
