Pretty Simple Purple Eyeshadow Tutorial by Martha Lynn Kale | Photos by Cory Ryan for Camille Styles

If you were to open up my Urban Decay eyeshadow palette, it’d be a dead giveaway as to what my eye makeup tendencies are. The taupes, beiges, golds, whites and grays are all practically gone, while the vibrant blues, greens and purples appear untouched… am I the only one terrified of using bold colors on my lids? Well since our Pretty Simple series is all about stepping outside of our comfort zones, I thought it the perfect time to have resident beauty expert Martha Lynn teach us a thing or two about using color on our lids. She predicts that we’re going to be seeing lots of dark purples this season, and if used correctly, the color can actually be used as a neutral. We’re loving the intense look Martha Lynn created here — keep reading to see how to recreate it in a few easy steps!

  1. Apply purple shadow from the lash line to the crease. We used Mac Nocturnelle with a Trish McEvoy size 6 brush.
  2. Apply pink shadow in the crease and blend with the purple shadow. We used Mac Expensive Pink.
  3. Use a black pencil to draw a thick line on the top lash line.
  4. Line the waterline of the eye with black pencil.
  5. Use a q-tip to carefully smudge the black eye liner on top.
  6. Apply the purple shadow with a small brush going along the outer edge of the lash line on the bottom lid.
  7. Apply mascara
  8. Finish off the look with a berry colored lip gloss.
