Everyday Smoky Eye in brown shades, tutorial by Martha Lynn Kale | photos by Kate Stafford for Camille Styles

The smoky eye still stands to be one of the most requested “how to’s” I hear from clients. Martha Lynn here, and I’m super excited to finally let you in on the tips and tricks I use to create this gorgeous, but still laid-back look. Best of all, this technique can be used to update your everyday shadow, or layered for a more dramatic evening look (hello holiday parties!). I tested out my new Bobbi Brown pallet on Camille, and I must confess that it went straight into my own personal makeup bag once we were done! Have you mastered the smoky eye? I’d love to hear your thoughts, and keep reading for the step-by-step!

*note: this should be done before foundation is applied.

  1. Use a flat eye shadow brush to apply a taupe shadow from lash line to crease.
  2. Using a crease brush and a slightly darker shadow, shade the outer half of the crease and the corners of the lid to create the illusion of a deeper crease.
  3. Use a clean fluffy brush to blend well.
  4. Use a flat shadow brush to highlight the brow bones with a light shadow.
  5. Create a base line by tracing along the upper and lower lash lines with the darkest shade in the palette and a liner brush.
  6. Use a very sharp black eye pencil to line the entire eye (including the inner corner) using a series of small strokes. Carefully line the upper water line, then blink to let liner “naturally” transfer to bottom water line.
  7. Use a small, clean brush and darkest shadow to blend the lash line out, creating a smoky effect.
  8. Use a makeup wipe to remove any flakes, then apply two coats of thickening black mascara. Apply foundation and rest of makeup, then use small brush to lightly re-smudge shadow if needed.
