Pretty Simple :: Top Knot Typology

Martha Lynn here, and I have to admit that I never met a top knot I didn’t like. What started out as a casual way to throw your hair up has – in the last year – turned into a full blown fashion obsession. Whether you just need another rainy day style in your back pocket or are looking for a more creative way to try your favorite “knot”, there is something for everyone. Here are a few of my favorite top knot styles to get you inspired!

Messy. Perfectly unperfect, this top knot has tons of texture and personality. Dry shampoo and a teasing brush are your best friend if you are trying to recreate this look. image source.


Lop Sided. The perfect top knot doesn’t have to be perfectly centered on your head. I love how this one is slightly off, and looks more fun and flirty! image source.

Neat. This look is clean and pulled together, but not overly fussy.  Focus on smoothing out stray hairs without removing any volume. This version isn’t about making it look too “slick”. image source.


Sleek. Unlike the “neat” look before, this bun is all about adding a little gel or serum to create an almost wet look. This look gave me instant flashbacks to the ballerina days of my childhood and looks super glamorous. image source.

Braided. The braided top knot looks especially amazing if you have highlights. The color definition really shows off the braid! image source.

Loose. This look is great if you don’t have a ton of really long hair. You can make loops of hair and pin each one down to create the illusion of lots of hair. image source.


Literal. This knot is fun because her hair is literally tied in a knot. You will probably want to add a couple of bobby pins to keep it tied all day. image source.


Dressed Up. The only thing better than a top knot is one with a little accessory. Wrap a scarf, secure your favorite brooch or tie a bow for a little added flair! image source.
