Dressed Up Loungewear

loungewear fashion trend 2016

ed. note: Next up in our Pulling It Off series: stylist Taylor Jarrett shows me that loungewear doesn’t have to be reserved for my living room couch — this season’s sets can be mixed and matched as part of a chic evening wardrobe with an easygoing vibe. Click through for Taylor’s tips on making it your chicest piece this fall…

For both the jetsetter and the girl at home studying (but dreaming of Paris), your outfit has a huge impact on your frame of mind, and consequently, what you might accomplish. From foundational wardrobe pieces to outerwear and accessories, why not aim for statement-making style in every setting? As cooler temps arrive, treat yourself by starting the day and ending the night with a chic set of loungewear that can be mixed and matched for going out or staying in.

When creating this look for Camille, I wanted to prove that today’s modern take on loungewear can be both dressed up and cozy! This is an outfit she’ll love for both breakfast in bed with the fam, or to wear out for croissants at her favorite café.

Tip #1: Perfect Fit

The most important and often underrated quality of loungewear is fit; like our more dressed-up pieces, loungewear should feel like it was made for you. This may be tough to accomplish every time with a matching set, so try pairing other options such as a fitted mock neck with your loungey bottoms. And don’t forget that everything can be tailored.

Tip #2: Smooth as Silk

Silk is the epitome of both chic and comfort when it comes to loungewear, and it’s always classic. For a more sporty and transitional look, I’m also a huge fan of the super comfy Weekender Sweats by Outdoor Voices.

Tip #2: Heavy Metals

Fall is the time to shine in metallics, as shown above in these dreamy silk pants by Veda. The unique saffron color feels so on trend this season, and pairs as well with neutral basics as it does with the matching top.

Tip #3: Versatility is Key

The coolest part about today’s contemporary twist on loungewear is that, for the most part, all of these garments are designed like street wear. From brands like MeUndies and Outdoor Voices using antimicrobial-like materials to engineer their garments, or brands such as VEDA and Olivia Von Halle whose designs have been influenced by menswear… they’re the perfect solutions for ditching jeans and wearing a suit-like pajama set on casual Fridays.

Tip #4: Shoe Game On Fleek

To pull off loungewear outside the house, your shoe game has to be on point. If you’re going for a trendy laid-back look, try a pair of Nike Air Force 1s or Common Projects Achilles Lows. If a more elevated look is what you have in mind, pair with a sleek pair of covered or peeptoe heels.
