“No matter how big the purse, a woman will always fill it,” I remember one middle school teacher telling me as she searched for her lipstick between classes. I was just then learning the importance of a good handbag: the other girls were competing with the latest models from Dooney & Burke (tassels, anyone?) but I preferred a boxy faux croc handbag of unrecognizable make. It had all the essentials — a shoulder strap, hidden inner compartment for scandalous notes, looked great with my Cole Haan loafers, and was just the right amount of “different” from everybody else. As an adult, my tastes haven’t changed much. I still love a shoulder strap option, prefer shades of nutmeg leather, and have a slight distaste for anything considered a “status” bag.
