Entertaining with :: The Little Yoga House

By Chanel Dror
The older I get, the more I realize what an impact my upbringing had on the person I am today. I can’t begin to tell you how many dramatic tears were wasted on my parents as I begged for drive-thru lunches, just so I could get my hands on a rewarding toy, yet today I couldn’t be more grateful to my mother for demanding we eat nutritious, homemade meals. With that in mind, we couldn’t let our healthiest month of the year pass by without taking a moment to show some love to the little ones. The Little Yoga House is Austin’s first kids and teen only yoga school, and aside from having the most whimsically gorgeous studio, they also know how to throw one heck of a children’s birthday party. We took a peek into Abby and An’s entertaining style for a look at what it takes to keep a group of 6-year olds engaged and interested for hours, plus a few pointers on wholesome food and drink options for when all your guests want is sugar! Keep reading for all the seriously adorable details.

The Little Yoga House is a one-of-a-kind children and youth only yoga studio that strives to offer young yogis the benefits of an ongoing yoga practice in a cozy, safe, and loving environment. Interested in throwing a birthday party there? Just pick a theme & let the staff at TLYH take care of the rest! We were fortunate to drop in on a “vintage circus” themed party… trés chic for a 6-year old.

Our walls are filled with creativity to provide an aesthetic that is inviting to children of all sizes. Our studio reads like a whimsically painted storybook with each room telling its own tale. Our doors are open to any and all who want to explore the magic of yoga.
Pictured is the welcoming entry room, which boasts a fluorescent peace sign, hand-painted mural that climbs up the wall onto the ceiling, and vintage folding theatre chairs for guests in waiting.

My favorite room of all is the teepee room. Bursting with toys, Little Yoga House merchandise and more fabulous design, this room doubles as a lounge where parents can enjoy refreshments while waiting for classes or parties to wrap up.

What is a party at The Little Yoga House like?

It sounds super fun. It smells like chai tea bliss. It feels warm and fuzzy.

Our standard hostess outfit:

Our signature teal logo T with a pair of yoga pants. An usually wears her hot pink lululemon pants because the kids love them, and they look great with the teal shirts!

Our signature entertaining dish:

Homemade special chai tea sweetened with local honey and rice milk! Kid approved deliciousness!

Our must-have entertaining tool:

An exciting, carefully thought out yoga journey to complement the theme of the party.

Did you know that children love giving and receiving massages? During Shavasana, Abby & An dimmed the lights as the kids took turns lying on their backs and giving one another foot and hand massages. We were stunned by how quiet and still they were after just having been rough and rowdy moments before.

The perfect party playlist includes:

We carefully construct a playlist for every party that complements the theme. Each party playlist is one of a kind! Today we enjoyed a circus mix found on spotify.

While the group sat in a circle, An passed around bells from different parts of the world — first Bali, then Italy, then England — for the kids to inspect and listen to the different jingles as An talked about the country. Then, in a stroke of brilliance, An announced that they’d move on to play ‘Silent Bells,’ where the bells were passed around the circle again, only this time the kids had to move slowly in order to keep them completely silent.

Guests were sent home with their own game of Yoga Toes (available for purchase in shop).

How to Play:

  • There’s only one rule: you can’t use your hands!
  • Place your bucket at the back of your yoga mat and dump out the pom poms. Then use your toes to pick up pom poms and place them back in the bucket.
  • For a challenge, try picking pom poms up with both feet, or try balancing poses like tree or airplane after picking up pom poms, then drop them into the bucket.
  • Dump out your bucket and count how many you collected!

The entertaining rule we rarely break:

To have as little waste as possible. We reuse plates and cups when we can and we recycle everything that we can. Our goal is to have only one small bag of trash at the end of the party.

Always in our refrigerator:

Organic juice mix & homemade chai tea mix.

Abby’s Homemade Chai Tea
  • 2-inch piece fresh ginger, cut into thin rounds
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 teaspoons black peppercorns
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 6 cardamom pods
  • 6 cups cold water
  • 6 bags of black tea (preferably Darjeeling)
  1. Put the first 5 ingredients in a saucepan and crush the seeds to mix everything together. Add water and bring to a boil. Partially cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. Take off heat and pour into a large glass mason jar with a lid. Add tea bags and allow to steep for 5 minutes. Place mason jar in the refrigerator until day of the event (this keeps for a while).
  3. On the day-of, heat up either on the stove or in the microwave and add rice milk as a substitute for dairy. I do equal parts rice milk and chai tea mixture.
  4. Add raw honey, stir and serve warm.

The taste kids are always craving:

Something sweet! We offer fruit, organic fruit juice, and cupcakes from Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop, who use the highest quality ingredients like Nielsen-Massey extracts, Valrhona chocolate, and locally sourced cage-free eggs. No preservatives and no mixes.

The Little Yoga House moment we will never forget:

A 3 year old girl named Kaylin walks in the door for the first time. She looks around very intrigued, but slightly skeptical. We begin to take her on a tour of the studio, and when we get to the bathroom (which is secretly our favorite room) she looks inside and says, “Ooooo fancy! I really like your curtains.” It was one of the most adorable moments we have ever experienced… she was 3 going on 30!

Photo booths don’t have to be fancy. Abby and An set theirs up against a bright curtain and offered kids a “body art bar” for choosing their accessories. They then took turns holding still and posing inside a frame.

Abby and An photographed the children on their Fuji Instax Camera. The photos developed in minutes and the kids were delighted to take their snapshots home with them.

Our entertaining style in 5 words or less:

Eco-friendly, whimsically detailed and magically vintage. We really like balloons!
