Byrd Collective :: Georgia On My Mind

There is just no place quite like downtown Savannah, GA… the old historic homes with secret gardens in hidden courtyards, the inviting squares full of children playing and students creating, and Forsyth Park, in all its splendor. I (Ashley) had just returned from a wonderfully inspirational trip to Savannah when the lovely Ana of Grown Up Shoes was coming to work with me, and I drew all my inspiration from my recent travels to create something special for her.

Walking into Austin Flower Company, I was greeted by gorgeous tulip magnolia branches and just knew it was a purple kind of day. Deep red ranunculus (and you know how I feel about ranunculus), purple lilac, parrot tulips and camellia filled my arms and put a twinkle in my eye, and I rushed home to fill one of my favorite containers: a black glass urn from the 1934 World’s Fair, found at the Austin Antique Mall. With such stunning blooms, it was easy to make an arrangement that might actually be found in the parlor of one of those beautiful old Savannah homes in the 1930′s. Follow the jump for a few more images of the final product, and I’d love to know… what city inspires you?

  9. [...] I’d definitely consider my relationship with purple a love-hate situation. It’s really the only color I never wear and I don’t think I have a touch of it in my home decor…yet when I lay eyes on a big bunch of dusty hydrangeas, a bowl full of ripe plums or that to-die-for violet topped cake above, I fall instantly in love despite myself. And I think I may have discovered the solution to my purple avoidance: combine it with juicy bursts of cherry for bold contrast without a trace of cloying sweetness. I’m definitely adding this one to my list of must-try palettes for upcoming styled shoots; since it manages to be girly without a trace of pink, wouldn’t it be perfection for a bestie’s birthday party or midsummer bridal shower? Gather hydrangeas, violets and garden roses in bold red vases, and intersperse with low vessels overflowing with cherries or pomegranates for a centerpiece that packs a punch. Hang a few coordinating lanterns, pour bubbly into these glasses and don a dress bursting with springtime ebullience. Hope you’re all having a lovely start to the week – and be sure to stop by later for more floral inspiration from The Byrd Collective!  [...]
