Jenn here, with a simple and fun little DIY created especially for you “I-hate-costumes” types! With Halloween fast-approaching, it’s not too late to put together an outfit you’ll have fun wearing. Ever since I caught the 1966 Audrey Hepburn film How to Steal A Million on Netflix a few months back, I’ve been thinking about the incredible black lace mask designed by Givenchy Audrey wears in the movie. I wanted to create my own version of a black lace mask — something that could be added to an already elaborate costume or just paired with a simple black cocktail dress. What I came up with is super easy to make:
• 1 ft of black lace fabric with scalloped edge
• 5 ft of black velvet ribbon (5/16 inches wide)
• black thread
• needle and thimble
• scissors
• pins
Begin by cutting one long strip off the edge of the fabric. Step the scissors back from the scalloped edge about 5 inches.
This is the strip you will use to make the mask. Hold the fabric up to your face in the mirror to determine how long the strip should be (mine was about 10 inches). Trim the edges accordingly. Take the un-scalloped edge of your fabric strip and fold over a 1-inch section. You’ll pin this fold along the back of the velvet ribbon. You can fold the ribbon in half to find it’s center. Make sure you pin the fabric strip to the center of the ribbon!
Run a simple whip-stitch across the top of the ribbon and lace from the back. Remove pins.
Take the scissors and trim the excess lace from the back of the mask. You’re done! I would wear this mask with lots of costume jewelry, long black gloves, or even this amazing skirt from Milly. Don’t be afraid to go darker than usual with your eye makeup to make sure your eyes really “pop” through the mask… and Happy Halloween!
