What’s Your Kitchen Style?

June 30th, 2013

Okay, okay, so what’s your dream kitchen style? If you’re like me, you’ve already spent hours concepting the perfect house you’ll eventually build — only to realize how hard it is to commit to just one style. One minute I want a Downton Abbey-esque kitchen with white subway tile, mahogany cabinets with brass knobs… and then I’ll see an image like this one of Carolina Castiglioni in her impossibly chic modern kitchen.  And I think, I could live there too! What style of kitchen do you dream about? Would you like to whip up dinner in a space with charming antique tile? Or is slick stainless steel more your speed? What about cabinets painted a bright and unexpected color? What appliances are on your wish list? Let us know in the comments!

  1. living in italy, you’d expect their kitchens to be sort of rustic, no? but they’re all chic, sleek and modern, which makes me crave that old world rustic, french-white feel even more! but these are beautiful as well!

Thanks so much for sharing this about Italy, Marissa. I’ve never been and yes, I would totally imagine the kitchens there to be more rustic/antique. Interesting that they lean more towards the modern look. Yet another reason I need to explore Italy soon!

      • Chiara says:

I confirm what marissa stated above! Here you’ll usually find sleek cabinets, without fancy knobs, almost utilitarian. I love it because you can find so many different colors – I had an orange kitchen in a previous apartment.
I confess that from time to time I long for a more rustic kind of kitchen, with white tile, old pots and ceramic, and a huge fireplace… But then you’d need a huge house for that!

  2. I think mine would be a combination of fresh victorian and the modern! Love the light fixture in the modern!

    loving these images!

  4. Meenakshi says:

Oh what a gorgeous bunch of kitchens! I’d love a sleek and modern litchen with an unexpected pop of color on the cabinets. And an island for sure. And a cut and throw slab like Amanda from Food52…finish chopping and sweep the scarps into the pullout waste basket below

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

That would be amazing, Meenakshi. I can see it now. Please — when you build that kitchen have me over for dinner!

  5. karin says:

sleek, but boy, I wouldn’t like to keep up the shine….

  6. Wren says:

all that blue would drive me right over the edge…….not too safe when you are handling knives :) i have learned that i function best in a serene white kitchen with warm touches like pottery vases and stone countertops. love the floor in the second photo!

I like the glass doors on the blue kitchen…but I think I would like white paint.

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

Yes, I’ve always liked glass door cabinets, too! But I’d to get way more organized for that…

  8. Winzer says:

I’d have to steer away from these and go country-Tuscan. I’d love a big farm table with miss matched chairs and retro antiques on the walls. I could mix a little of the Victorian in there with some bright colors too.

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

I love the idea of a big farm table. I especially like the really long and narrow ones. Your dream kitchen sounds heavenly!

  9. Lauren Hay says:

I think I’d steer towards a modern styled kitchen with vintage accessories! I really like kitchens that use like a white and a single highlighting colour but then I love ones which use wood as well!

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

That sounds lovely, Lauren. And I agree — an all-white kitchen with one bold color mixed in (like turquoise, yellow, or bright green) can be dynamite!

  10. Sarah says:

I love a cross between gorgeous mid-century modern and present-day modern scandinavian. White subway tiles, solid beech counter tops, minimalist cupboard doors and handles. And a big brass starburst 60s style clock on the wall.

  11. Indiana Munn says:

I’m a mix in style between English country and industrial. Its a bit of a crazy mishmash. Appliance wise, I would love a Kitchen Aid Mixer to replace my truster Kenwood. But I can’t decide if I want it in cherry red, cream or black….

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

Your kitchen sounds really unique and cool, Indiana. I say don’t play it safe — go for the red mixer!

  12. Kelly says:

Mine is laid back, clean, crisp and modern. Mainly because I do not have room for anything else!

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

That sounds lovely, Kelly! Smaller spaces can really make us edit down our belongings to just the good stuff.

  13. Elisa says:

I have the same issue. I fall in love with one style…and then see something else I love in a completely different style. My house was severely damaged by water a few years ago and we had to gut the whole thing and start over. I love the styles we chose, but still look longingly at different kitchens too. The ones you’ve shown here are SO gorgeous!

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

Thanks, Elisa! I’ve been thinking that multiple homes is the only real solution for our condition. ;)

  15. Dose of Dash says:

I always have a hard time deciding! This is the problem with all of my design crushes – I like too many different styles! I think I would like elements of the first sleek, open kitchen in the third kitchen. I like white because it seems open and airy, but I also need a good amount of accent colors. Although I appreciate the Stockholm aesthetic that everyone is obsessed with nowadays, at I least I know that one just isn’t for me.

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

Thanks for sharing! I think a mix between the first kitchen and the third could actually be really nice. The light fixture would definitely translate well. Seems like several of you would like to see the third kitchen painted white!

  16. Pauline Kiwii says:

Hard question ! I think I would like a modern kitchen, but not too much. Light grey and white would be the dominant colors, and touch of red to motivate, with a place to grow little vegetables and herbs.

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

Love the idea of a touch of red. Though I don’t wear it often, red is one of my favorite colors for interiors. And a place to grow vegetables and herbs would be perfect! Thanks for sharing, Pauline.
