For the second installment of our Thanksgiving table series, we have another insanely beautiful table design – this one, from the talented team at McKenzie Powell Floral & Event Design. With a background that combines gardening and graphic design, McKenzie travels the country melding her knowledge of design with a lush, romantic style she brings to each of her floral creations. I just love the way she defines her entertaining philosophy: Dinner tables are to be lovingly set, candles to be lit. A home (or an event) must be filled with beautiful things. For today’s post, she stays true to her tendency to “think beyond the centerpiece” by adding extra touches of seasonality and floral embellishment around the entire room. Keep reading for gorgeous shots by Michele M. Waite, along with McKenzie’s tips on blending the old and the new for a decidedly modern Thankgiving table.

My inspiration was actually a large piece of amazing dusty blue velvet that I’d been holding onto for a while without an exact purpose in mind. When I saw my friend’s table and fireplace and the beautiful architectural details in her home, I knew right away that I wanted to design a Thanksgiving table that brought together the old and the new.

To keep things fresh, I paired the blue with various shades of berry and deep pinks and kept the small amount of bold print (that I knew I needed somewhere) for the napkins. An easy design for anyone to execute, I traded a traditional floral centerpiece for an eclectic mix of glass candlesticks with ‘harvest gold’ tapers and left the flowers for small arrangements at each place-setting.

And that lovely mantel — it beckoned for something a bit more grand and wild in the way of flowers, so beyond that, a few extra candles and fall fruit were the only additional touches required.

Dining in front of the fireplace has got to be the icing on the… pumpkin pie, and come on, even if your table is nowhere near your fireplace, moving all of the living room furniture around to accommodate would be completely worth it!
