If you’ve been to a farmers’ market lately, no doubt you’ve noticed the rows upon rows of colorful tomatoes in all shapes & sizes, so ripe they’re nearly bursting with juice. Tomato season is one of my favorite times of the year, and I’ve been obsessed with incorporating this concept for an “Heirloom Tomato Exhibition Bar” into a party menu ever since I spotted it on photographer Jose Villa’s blog last year. During cocktail hour of this super-chic wedding, a staff chef sliced fresh heirloom tomatoes and dressed them with guests’ choice of oils, vinegars, herbs, artisan sea salts & cheeses. There were even brioche rolls and crispy pancetta so guests could build the yummiest mini-BLT’s (so fab!) I’m planning to adapt this concept for a Labor Day barbecue with a gourmet spin…what a perfect way to experience summer’s sweetness one last time!
