How to Organize Your Closet

August 12th, 2014

Three months ago my closet was a mess — and when I say a mess, I mean I had to call in the professionals. With a little help from Jill Siegel and Peter Stafford of California Closets, I was able to transform the scariest room in my house into a place of inspiration. Getting ready in the morning — what was once a truly dreadful task — is now a relaxing and creative experience. It was an incredibly fun process, and along the way I learned a few great tips from Jill and Peter that anyone can apply to their current closet situation, no matter the budget. Read on for some solid tips on organization, and to see my dramatic closet transformation in action:

  8. I’m stuck on step #1 of editing my wardrobe. there are so many “i’ll wear it one day” pieces that I keep around…..

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

I know, Teresa. That’s probably the hardest part! Jill suggests that you don’t necessary have to get rid of those items altogether, just remove them from the closet space. You could store them under a bed, in a different closet, or in a dresser while you’re not needing them everyday.

What an amazing “before” and “after” post. California Closets did a great job in transforming your space into a dream closet! Hopefully, (along with the great tips you shared), this will inspire me to get my closet organized.

Love this! I’m currently in the middle of a closet remodel and these tips were really helpful. I didn’t see any notes about where your lighting fixture is from and/or who makes it… will you please share? Thanks!

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

Hi Allistas — the light fixture is the luna pendant from Schoolhouse Electric. Check out their site, they have SO many great statement fixtures!

  15. Abby Tohline says:

I have been wanting to down size my closet for a few months. I need to go through and purge like 75%! Maybe this will give me the inspiration I need to just do it!

    • Jennifer Rose Smith says:

Yes! It was so worth it. The irony is, even though I have fewer total garments now, I’m actually wearing a wider variety of them because I can see/get to them in the morning.

  16. I feel like attacking my closet with new resolve after seeing this. The ongoing donation bag instead of a yearly purge is such a good idea and one I haven’t heard before.

  17. Dora N. says:

I’m a fan of your blog but am surprised you have a link to Hobby Lobby. You can find similar items at many stores without supporting a place that is against women’s reproductive health and choice.

My sentiments exactly, but remember this is a California Closet blog, more or less, thus grand and not for most of us!
