Are any of you as excited as I am for the return of Mad Men this evening? One of my favorite aspects of the show has been watching the fashion evolve through the sixties. We always know what’s coming next, but can’t wait to see how designer Janie Bryant will reveal it to us. Now that the mini-skirt clad Megan is in full effect, it’s almost hard to remember the Grace Kelly-esque Betty from Season One! With modern lines and bright colors, the sixties have always been my favorite decade for fashion. We’ve whipped together a little guide to fashion by the decade, complete with movies to “research” and a few tips on how to achieve each look. Which is your favorite retro style? Let us know in the comments section!

Totally loving the 50’s. Something so classic, elegant & completely ladylike.
Love that look! I’ve been seeing a lot of cute fifties-inspired dresses at Anthropologie this spring.
I’m a total 60’s & 70’s girl… with a little bit of early 90’s thrown into the mix, I’ve been told 😉
Yes! If anyone could pull off biker shorts, it’s you.
Funny you should say that… I’m wearing my favorite pair right now!
In my mind, I would love to be a 40’s girl – red lips, perfectly curled hair, cinched waist, etc. But in reality, I’m more of a laid back 70’s girl.
I know what you mean, Natalie. Even though I love the bouffant hair and false eyelashes of the sixties, most of my friends would say I have a seventies look, too. I think that decade is more accessible for most of us and is a way lower-maintenance look to pull off. Especially when it comes to the hair!
I’ve always loved the 70’s and just bought a new pair of denim flares from EF – takes me back to Charlie’s Angels!!
Nice! I’ve been liking Mother jeans a lot lately for a seventies fit. I’ll have to check out EF!
I’d say I lean towards femme 50’s a lot of days… though I’m always trying to achieve that perfect mix of laid-back glamour that the 70’s sirens achieved so well.
Yes, you are definitely 50s, C! But I’d love to see you in a 40s getup… Those high-waisted trousers would look great on you!
60s and 70s! Little bit factory girl, little bit bohemian with a splash of late 70s Vivienne Westwood punk rock! Fits my ADD perfectly;)
WINZ! Good to see you on here. Yes, you are living in your own parallel decade of punk/glam awesomeness. I keep waiting for you to bring the pixie cut back!
I’m 50’s FOR SURE. Love this post, Jen! 🙂 I say you’re a 70’s gal!
Yes, Jess, you are SO fifties! What can I say, I love my faded denim.
Sixties, definitely! I love the look of the late 60s – big hair, mod prints, dramatic eyes.
Me, too, Nicole! I’d love to learn how to really use false eyelashes to achieve that look.
I like all but the 80’s. You know me Camille,I’m a little bohemian. 🙂
We love your cute bohemain style, Gail!
Definitely a 60s girl (love the fashion, home decor, even graphic design from that period). But, must say I do like how Rachael Zoe does 70s … that bohemian chic is hard to resist, too.
Right? I love Rachel — she knows how to rock that Bianca Jagger look so well!
I’m all about the fifties (with a splash of the forties). I like that tailored style.

Nice! Mixing elements from the two decades could be really cool.
I love the 70’s glam look. Always have!
Cool. I love the decadence and attitude of that era. SO rock n roll!
I’m certainly 50’s. I grew up watching old, classic movies with Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, so I’ve always been attracted to silhouettes from their era. Although I love the 70’s accessories. Love this post! I’m so inspired to look at my style and closet differently seeing all of the era influences!
Thanks, Katie. Sounds like most of us enjoy mixing elements from different decades to create our own unique style!
i love this, all of these are perfect style examples, but i love the 60s the most!
lately I’ve been inspired by Audrey Hepburn as well!

A girl by my own heart! I need to watch more Audrey movies. Just recently saw “Charade” and loved it!
Really love this post. Hard to call…but I think the 60’s win for me.
Love the look. D
My favorite, too!
Seventies for me. I love the forties but since I am in my late forties, I think this look ages me. I look and feel younger in a seventies vibe. BeeGees anyone?
I can totally see how a seventies look would always feel young! And yes, I’ve been known to secretly listen to the BeeGees… I love their song “Grease Is The Word”!
