Have you ever inherited a piece of furniture that wasn’t quite your style? A China cabinet, dining set, or maybe the childhood piano that, as much as you love it, just doesn’t mesh, perhaps? You know I’m a sucker for raw, aged wood and modern lines, so I was surprised by how much I loved the traditional piano in this living space. Just one more testament to the fact that a sheepskin rug looks good draped on pretty much anything! I wouldn’t have thought to pair this piece with a feathered headdress or an industrial photograph, but this family definitely made it work. The white walls and sparse styling also helped to create a blank, modern canvas. Keep reading to see how you can bring this look home, and I’d love to know… How have you worked a family heirloom into your home?

I inherited a glass front china cabinet that I really didn’t want/need but took for sentimental reasons. I put it in my formal living room and use it to display all of our barware. The drawers store all of my table linens. It fits the room and looks great!

this very timely. we have a ton of furniture from my husband’s now-gone grandmother and it is not at all my style. hoping to refinish some and make it work better when we move in a few weeks!

i have agate coasters that i love and my sheepskins placed around the house so i am digging the inspiration collage. we just bought, yesterday, and industrial style coffee table that is so not my thing (i like really clean lines and light wood and “pretty” items). but somehow this guy caught my eye and i added it to our very homey and white living room. it basically made the entire space interesting, fresh, and new! love it

Good point Kelsey, adding a piece that’s not your style can make the whole space more interesting!

So do I, doesn’t it remind you of Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast?

There’s no such thing as “your style” as it will change through the years. Immensely. And whne day that piece becomes just the perfect thing to add and you’ll be happy you kept it.
    Lovely suggestions, C.

I love this post, I don’t know how many times I’ve been given something that I love because of it’s sentimental parts, but was not sure what to do with. This is a great example of how things can work!
