There’s no arguing the fact that when it comes to stylish entertaining, the smallest details can make a big impact. At our Cinco de Mayo fiesta last week, guests kept oohing and aahing over the fun, festive skewers we used to serve fresh watermelon with feta cheese. And I’ve got to admit, there’s no better feeling than being able to say, “I made them!” They were beyond easy to put together, and best of all, can be recreated in endless color palettes to go with any party concept you dream up. Perfect for individually served appetizers or cocktail swizzle sticks, they’re a sweet detail that makes any menu item dressed for a party.
- wooden skewers
- scissors
- shallow container
- 1 cup hot water
- measuring cup
- red food coloring
- wooden beads (these can be spray painted to be desired colors)
- hot glue gun
- Cut skewers to approximately 5 inches long.
- Squeeze 15-20 drops of food coloring into measuring cup.
- Add 1 cup hot water.
- Place skewers in shallow container, and pour food coloring mixture into container. Weigh down sticks with a rock or paper cup to keep from floating, and allow to “steep” for 3 hours.
- Remove sticks and allow to dry.
- String beads onto non-pointed end of sticks. Squeeze a small dot of hot glue in between beads to secure in place.

Editor’s note: the skewers are holding one of my favorite flavor combos for ANY day, but especially Cinco de Mayo: fresh watermelon sprinkled with queso fresco and sea salt. I’ll be eating it all summer long!
They’re beautiful! Can you wash and reuse them?
Thanks, L! We haven’t tried, but there’s a good chance they’d hold up, as long as it’s a hand washing. If you give it a shot, let us know how it goes! xo
Very cute! And so versatile.
Adorable, very cute idea.
These are the cutest! What a great idea!
Love the skewers! The watermelon and feta look delish. Definitely thinking these will have to make an appearance at a backyard BBQ this year. 🙂
These are great for summer!
Found your skewers on Etsy and LOVE what you did with them.
I’d love to send you some of the NEW Pretty Party Skewers I’m getting ready to launch – they are clear lucite and are reusable. I’m sending samples out for feedback to select recipients and would love to see you work your magic with them.

Thanks again for the inspiration!!
I tried these.. and one thing was left out in this post… VINEGAR!! I left them soaking for 5+ hours and nothing lol. I dyed my skewer sticks blue for a boy’s birthday party and used washi tape to flag the ends. Very cute.
