Editors’ Essentials :: Elizabeth

By Chanel Dror

Nobody knows local food like Elizabeth Winslow, and as the author of our Tastemakers series, she treats us to exclusive, behind-the-scenes peeks into Austin’s ultimate foodies twice a month. So today we’re thrilled that Elizabeth is getting to play “interviewee,” sharing her must-have essential items with us. Without further ado…

Vintage Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses. I scored a pair on ebay this summer, and I’m pretty sure these will be my eyewear soul mates for life. image source (original unknown).

Cook club. Once a month, I get together with three close friends — we cook up great food, try new things, laugh and talk, and share recipes and secrets—I can’t imagine life without these ladies and the food we share! image source.

My Austin Public Library card. I can get lost for hours in the rows and rows of cookbooks on the third floor at Faulk Central Library. image source.

Aged Gouda cheese. I’m loving the nutty, sharp cheese with fall produce — it’s especially delicious in potato gratin or tossed with pasta, toasted pecans, and butternut squash. image source.

Road trips. Now that our kids are older, we love to take epic family road trips. We load up the Volvo wagon with a giant tent, books, and a big cooler and head out for the better part of the summer to camp, cook, and explore, discovering new favorite restaurants, beautiful scenery, and each other along the way. image source.

Gjelina Takeaway. If I could put any restaurant in my back pocket and bring it home with me, it would be Gjelina Takeaway in Venice Beach. You can order an incredible lamb pizza from the wood burning oven or choose from platters piled high with gorgeous salads. For breakfast, there are buttery, flaky date and bacon scones or tartines with persimmon and prosciutto or fresh ricotta and sticky berry confit. You eat outside in an alley on upside down milk crates with your plate balanced on your knees and people watch for hours. image source.

Madewell denim jacket. A perfect-fitting jean jacket never goes out of style—my fall go-to outfit is a little black dress, tights and boots and a dark-wash jacket. image source.

Nigel Slater’s Tender. I can read this love story to vegetables over and over again, and I never stop being inspired by Slater’s recipes. image source.

SFC Farmers’ Market. Every Saturday morning, you’ll find me downtown stocking up for the week and checking in with the fine folks who grow beautiful food for our community. image source.

Incense of the West Pinon Inscents. When fall finally arrives in Austin, I love to open all the windows and doors and fill the house with this wild and untamed scent—it reminds me of desert sunsets. image source.

Lodge cast iron skillet. Some things just can’t be improved upon—this classic turns out perfect pancakes, braised pork chops, biscuits, and peach upside down cake, and I’d be lost without it. image source.
