Well, it’s back to reality after a heavenly stay at Four Seasons The Biltmore in Santa Barbara last week to celebrate our last little getaway before baby. The resort was breathtaking – oozing California glamour and nestled on the shores of Montecito – and of course I’ll share my favorite snapshots, but first a little poll: what do you guys think of the term “babymoon?” I ask, because this is an ongoing debate between me and Adam, who thinks the whole concept seems really contrived and would rather call it “the last vacation we take alone prior to having the baby.” I think this seems like an unnecessary mouthful, since for all practical purposes, a babymoon is exactly what we just took…and I personally think that a babymoon is a fantastic opportunity to savor precious time with “just the two of us” before our new addition arrives. It was so strange to stop and realize that for every trip we ever go on in the future, we’ll either be toting along a child, or missing the child that we left at home! I’d love for you guys to weigh in with your thoughts on the whole issue, and keep reading for lots more details and photos from the trip!
We embraced the hazy mornings (blame it on “June Gloom”) by taking advantage of Santa Barbara’s fantastic shopping. Each day began at Montecito institution Jeannine’s for a healthy, hearty breakfast, then we strolled along State Street (prettiest shopping “mall” ever) or browsed the vendors at the farmers’ market.
Now back to our hotel… Four Seasons The Biltmore was definitely the hub of our activity during the week, from rejuvenating time at the spa (prenatal massage is one of the best inventions ever) to people-watching at the retro glam Coral Casino Beach Club to hours spent strolling the cliff that overlooks Butterfly Beach. The Spanish-Cali architecture and lush tropical landscape (bougainvillea, jasmine and trumpet vines spilled from every surface) provided endless inspiration to bring home with me. And, as would be expected from Four Seasons, the staff made us feel like royalty.
We spent one afternoon hiking through the mountains to the top of Inspiration Point for spectacular views, then headed to Santa Barbara’s harbor for amazingly fresh seafood and fun, crowded vibe at Brophy Bros. Then on to check out the Mission and the gorgeous City Hall where it just so happens that Gwyneth said her “I do’s” to Chris Martin…
I’ve gotta admit, several times throughout the trip I couldn’t help thinking how excited I’d be to bring our baby girl back to Santa Barbara one day to show her all the gorgeous spots we visited. But for this week, I couldn’t have asked for anything better than quality time with just the two of us, soaking up the beauty of the ocean, sky and breathtaking flowers…and eating so much great food. And thanks again to the rockstar team at Four Seasons The Biltmore for making our stay completely unforgettable!
