Well, it’s back to reality after a heavenly stay at Four Seasons The Biltmore in Santa Barbara last week to celebrate our last little getaway before baby. The resort was breathtaking – oozing California glamour and nestled on the shores of Montecito – and of course I’ll share my favorite snapshots, but first a little poll: what do you guys think of the term “babymoon?” I ask, because this is an ongoing debate between me and Adam, who thinks the whole concept seems really contrived and would rather call it “the last vacation we take alone prior to having the baby.” I think this seems like an unnecessary mouthful, since for all practical purposes, a babymoon is exactly what we just took…and I personally think that a babymoon is a fantastic opportunity to savor precious time with “just the two of us” before our new addition arrives. It was so strange to stop and realize that for every trip we ever go on in the future, we’ll either be toting along a child, or missing the child that we left at home! I’d love for you guys to weigh in with your thoughts on the whole issue, and keep reading for lots more details and photos from the trip!

We embraced the hazy mornings (blame it on “June Gloom”) by taking advantage of Santa Barbara’s fantastic shopping. Each day began at Montecito institution Jeannine’s for a healthy, hearty breakfast, then we strolled along State Street (prettiest shopping “mall” ever) or browsed the vendors at the farmers’ market.

Now back to our hotel… Four Seasons The Biltmore was definitely the hub of our activity during the week, from rejuvenating time at the spa (prenatal massage is one of the best inventions ever) to people-watching at the retro glam Coral Casino Beach Club to hours spent strolling the cliff that overlooks Butterfly Beach. The Spanish-Cali architecture and lush tropical landscape (bougainvillea, jasmine and trumpet vines spilled from every surface) provided endless inspiration to bring home with me. And, as would be expected from Four Seasons, the staff made us feel like royalty.

We spent one afternoon hiking through the mountains to the top of Inspiration Point for spectacular views, then headed to Santa Barbara’s harbor for amazingly fresh seafood and fun, crowded vibe at Brophy Bros. Then on to check out the Mission and the gorgeous City Hall where it just so happens that Gwyneth said her “I do’s” to Chris Martin…

I’ve gotta admit, several times throughout the trip I couldn’t help thinking how excited I’d be to bring our baby girl back to Santa Barbara one day to show her all the gorgeous spots we visited. But for this week, I couldn’t have asked for anything better than quality time with just the two of us, soaking up the beauty of the ocean, sky and breathtaking flowers…and eating so much great food. And thanks again to the rockstar team at Four Seasons The Biltmore for making our stay completely unforgettable!

I think “Babymoon” is a perfectly fitting title and it looks like you two had the most amazing time soaking each other in. The beautiful surrounding surely didn’t hurt 😉

Beautiful! Camille, you always looks so cute, what are some of your favorite go tos for maternity clothes?

    • Camille Styles June 5, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Thanks Erin! Even though I thought I’d be one of those pregnant girls who just buys “normal” clothes in bigger sizes, I’ve found that the maternity clothes are actually so much more flattering for my growing bod! (and the tops are nice and long to cover my bump!) I’ve gotten some great pieces from Michael Stars, Splendid and Isabella Oliver that I find myself wearing over and over… Due Maternity’s site has a great selection of basics.

I grew up visiting Santa Barbara because I have family there and it’s still my favorite place to take a vacation! Your trip looks awesome; I especially love Brophy Bros! Isn’t the whole vibe of the town so wonderful? My dream is to retire (many years from now) in a little cottage off of State Street 🙂 Great post, I enjoyed it so much!

I went to UC Santa Barbara so spent 4+ years in the area and it’s unbelievably gorgeous! Brophy Bros. is a longtime favorite and I’m thrilled you had such a wonderful time in a beautiful area!

You look AMAZING for being so far along! I’d love to know what you are and aren’t eating and if it’s not innappropiate, how much baby weight you’ve gained. I am TERRIFIED of all the girls I know that look like they’ve put on 40 lbs. You look healthy and so happy.

Oh, and back to the subject- Babymoon is totally right. Like you said, it’s a one word description of what Adam can say in an essay. Looks like it was just perfect. xx

    • Camille Styles June 5, 2012 at 1:04 pm

Thanks so much Denisse, you know how to make a preggers girl feel GOOD! 😉 To be honest, I’m eating almost exactly what I ate before I was pregnant. During my first tri, I was disgusted by the smell & taste of vegetables, which was tough for a healthy eater like me! But thankfully, at the 12 week mark, my taste buds went totally back to normal. I’m eating loads of fresh vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins like chicken and low-mercury fish, and I start every day with steel-cut oats or greek yogurt. I’m trying not to indulge my sweet tooth TOO much, but I have been eating a scoop of ice cream or frozen yogurt with berries after dinner. Saw my doctor this morning, and she said that when all is said and done I will have gained about 25 pounds or so.

My vote is for Babymoon! And I agree with all of the other commenters. You are supposed to say nice things to pregnant women but you truly look fantastic. (When I was pregnant, I think I was as long as I was tall. : )

You guys are ADORABLE! I actually mentioned your trip to my hubby over breakfast out last weekend, and he said “Oh man, can you imagine? It’s like your last hurrah with your wife!” which I guess answers that question, haha. I think it would be completely romantic. What an unforgettable memory! And I love the idea of bringing your daughter back to experience the town. SB is really a magical place (good choice)!

Beautiful pictures (and I mean the ones with you in them!). We love a trip to Santa Barbara, and next time you go, spoil yourself at this restaurant: http://restaurantjulienne.com/. But make reservations. It’s small and never a table free. PS: vote babymoon!

Your trip looked fabulous! It is absolutely a babymoon! Does he have the same issue with a honeymoon (or the first vacation that you will travel on together after the wedding festivities)? 🙂
