Am I the only one who still gets chills when they hear that first “back-to-school” commercial on TV every year? As a girl I was firmly a Child of Summer, and nothing sounded worse to me than trading in my freedom for a desk and schedule. If there was one thing that softened the blow each year, it was the annual shopping trip my mother and I made to Dallas in search of a few things I’d be excited to wear in the fall. Even though I’ve been out of school for some time now, Mom and I sometimes still do our “back-to-school” shopping trip! And this year I’m loving a schoolhouse look: pinafores, blazers, pleats, and over-the-knee socks paired with flats and loafers. So whether you’re headed back to class this fall or not, try these collegiate classics for a smarter look:

01 Don’t forget your homework with the heritage backpack from Herschel Supply Co.
02 Text between classes with a leopard print calf hair iPhone case from J. Crew
03 Cram all night under the light of the libby tall desk lamp in antique brass
04 You’ll be head of the class in a pair of begley cedar tortoise frames from Warby Parker
05 Take notes in this sweet polka dot notebook from Father Rabbit
06 Drive the boys wild in a pair of over-the-knee ribbed 1937 socks from Madewell
07 Stay gold in this classic v-neck cardigan by Aspesi from Steven Alan
08 We’re loving this plaid box pleat skirt from Alice and Olivia (along with their entire fall collection — there is so much Cher Horowitz happening we can’t even handle it.)
09 Customize your own pair of tasseled slippers at Chatelles Paris
10 Keep those number 2 pencils sharp inside this chameleon collection pencil case from Smythson (and when in doubt, pick “C”)
11 Live vicariously through two of the most angst-ridden students in American literature: Amory Blaine and Holden Caulfield.

Thanks, Vaida! I’m pretty pumped to get a pair of those socks, too. When they were popular in the nineties you couldn’t find them anywhere in small town Texas. Now is my time!

Well, Father Rabbit is based in New Zealand, so I’d say there’s a good chance they do!

such great picks! i was a complete summer girl as well, but there is something kind of magical about a new school year and new clothes, new pencils, fresh pieces of paper, and a new start.

Candice, they are so amazing. I bought an orange pair with neon orange tassels from them. I will say beware, because they tend to stretch. Order down a half-size at least.

I loved going back to school!! It gave me a chance to reinvent myself from year to year and from hair color to hair color. I’m thinking I need that iPhone case pronto!

Yes! You always looked amazing with so many different hair colors. You were like the Linda Evangelista of our grade.

I have a pair and they are AMAZING. You should definitely check out their site, http://www.mychatelles.com/. It’s so much fun to play with the custom options for each shoe. And like I commented to someone else above, mine stretched so I recommend ordering a half-size down.

I wish I still was as child of summer – summer’s not quite the same when you don’t get that break from your duties (e.g., work)! Love the tassel on those loafers. I might just have to take a cue from you and your mom and still continue the tradition of back-to-school shopping… any excuse to splurge! Haha. 🙂

Yes, I highly recommend the back-to-school shopping trip! And agreed — I’m always a bit sad when I realize I have to keep getting up and going to work in June. I miss those summer days of sleeping in, swimming, and reading.

Thanks, Sayeh! I’ve never had an iphone case before (I guess I like to live dangerously?) but I would totally rock that one.
