Lesson learned the hard way, m’dears: never ever spend an afternoon shooting margaritas while pregnant. The temptation is way too great, and while I managed to resist (this baby does not need tequila in her diet) I have to admit that I started a mental 3-months-til-margarita countdown. I don’t think a summer cocktail exists that’s better than a simple, no-frills margarita made with agave nectar. That’s right, no sweet-and-sour or triple sec in this blend, my friends – and it really makes all the difference. If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll drop in a few blackberries and muddle them in the bottom of the glass for dramatic color and deeper flavor, and you can always double this recipe, add ice and blend it all together for a frozen treat. But when you’re craving the classic, all you really need is fresh limes, agave syrup and good silver tequila. Oh, and chips and guac is kind of a must, too. Keep reading for more images and the recipe…

Agave Margaritas

Ingredients:

  • 1 lime wedge
  • Kosher salt
  • Ice
  • 2 ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1 ounce light agave nectar

Instructions:

Moisten half of the outer rim of a glass with the lime wedge (that way, you get salty on one side, but it doesn’t overpower the drink!) and twist the edge into a saucer full of kosher salt . Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the tequila, lime juice and agave nectar. Shake well and strain into the glass. Bottoms up!

First… yum. Second… beautiful photos. Third… the one thing I craved more than anything whilst I was pregnant was margaritas (this, after a nearly 10 year aversion to Tequila)!

Hi Joy! You should be able to find it at any large grocery store – look near the honey or maple syrup 🙂

I had a local small country store owner digging through his walk in cooler looking for non alcoholic beer in my sixth month. I rarely drink beer but the craving was horrible. He gave me them free when he finally found a partial 6pack. These look so good. I’m going to have to try these when I get home.

Great recipe and can’t wait to try! This just inspired me to add a cocktail shaker to my registry … yummy! Pomegranates and/or kumquats may also be fun to add to the recipe.

These look delicious and so refreshing! I just love how your glasses always seem to be paired perfectly with the drink they hold. I recently tossed out all my mismatched glasses in hopes of replacing them with a new set from Anthropologie, but I’m just curious as to how big of a set you would recommend that I get. We never have huge dinner parties, but I would definitely love to start having more people over in the future. When you add a new set of glasses to your collection do you have a certain number that works for most of your smallish get togethers? Thanks and once again, your blog is simply outstanding!

That’s a great question (and thanks for all the sweet words!) I typically purchase 8 of everything. Whenever I get less, it always seems to be the time I end up with 7 guests and I’m kicking myself for only having 6! 🙂

I love agave margaritas. I am actually having one now before I saw your post. 😉 I make mine with 1.5 oz tequilla and .5 oz grand marnier, the rest is the same as yours. I like the orange liquor flavor with the fresh lime juice over ice. Yummy
