12 DIY Gifts That People Will Actually Want

December 7th, 2017

As cliché as it may be, my favorite part of the holiday season is picking out the perfect gift for my family and friends. But if you have a Christmas list as long as mine, it can prove difficult to check everyone without breaking the bank. That’s why I’m choosing to DIY many of my holiday gifts this year, and I’ve learned that the key to creating homemade gifts that people will cherish (and actually keep beyond the new year) is to personalize them to each person’s personality. The hostess in your life will love sporting a waxed canvas apron handcrafted by you. The interior aficionado will swoon over the copper wall hanging you create, and the beauty junkie will rave about your homemade gemstone soaps for months! Scroll through the gallery below to see more of our favorite DIY gifts. There’s no better feeling than seeing your loved ones unwrap your gifts and exclaim, “You made this?!”

I love things like bath salts, soaps and hampers as diy gifts because they’re so easy to make in bulk while still feeling special and personal – super good for the unexpected gifts you always end up with!

These are really nice. The gifts I’ve received that I’ve appreciated the most have always been handmade. I made many gifts last year because I was so repulsed by the commercialism of my in-laws–one year there was a low limit on gifts but we were supposed to give something to everybody because MIL liked LOTS of presents, even if they were junk. Then she died and it was decided to draw names so there was only one present to buy but it would be a very nice present. Which resulted in an exchange of shopping lists. Sorry, but I find that vulgar. Yes, it’s practical, but IMHO it misses the point of Christmas, which isn’t about the amount spent but the thought and effort given. Buying an item off a shopping list involves zero thought or effort.
All the same, I am ditching the homemade gifts this year because nobody really cared. If it doesn’t have a designer label, it doesn’t count for them.

I love your gift ideas. One shop I think your readers might enjoy is Southern Linens, an etsy store in Charleston, SC. It has beautiful and affordable monogrammed linens for today’s living. I have ordered a number of things from them and there are great gifts for everyone.

I tried some DIY face and lip scrubs and they are perfect for this cold, winter weather. Not sure whether they are quite up to scratch as gifts yet though.
