Certain beauty products will always have a special place in our hearts, and in our makeup bags. Whether you’ve sworn by NARS Orgasm blush, MAC Russian Red Lipstick, or that trusty shade of taupe shadow since the beginning of time, there’s nothing wrong with having reliable staples (or go-to beauty looks that will always make you feel confident). But, at the same time, variety is the spice of life — and, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t tell you about the fabulous new beauty products that are worth temporarily storing your Orgasm for, right?

I want to start this off with a disclaimer: I’m not saying that you should toss any of your existing products that work for you. Rather, my goal is to provide a bit of a tip sheet that may help you take advantage of the new season with some new, fabulous products that will not only give you a new look, but potentially make your life easier in the process. Without further ado, my suggestions for the best makeup bag updates on the season — tell me which shiny new primpers you’ll be trying out!

Shelve it: Lip gloss

A sheer slick of color is always flattering — especially in the summer months, when we’re often looking for an easy hint of tint rather than a heavy lipstick that may smudge in the heat. But hey, nothing says autumn like a nice switch of a lip, am I right?

Swap for: Liquid lipstick

Sheer and subtle is all well and good, but when the invigorating fall breeze begins to blow, I usually crave a look that’s a bit more dramatic. My solution: liquid lipstick, which applies as easily as a gloss but provides super-pigmented, long-lasting color payoff.

Shelve it: Powder blush

Powder blush is so easy and straightforward that I’d never blame anyone for reaching for it day after day. However, while a powder may be a staple in almost everyone’s makeup bag, it can be fun to have a variety of blush textures to play around with.

Swap for: Cheek stain

Enter: cream cheek stain. It’s super-easy to apply (as long as you have the right brush! I use this one to dab it on, and the texture is somehow more natural and more of a statement. If you always reach for the same subtle peachy-pink powder, here’s your chance to take a deeper shade for a spin. Dab a bit of this cream on your lips as well, to keep the look balanced and cohesive.

Shelve it: Pencil eyeliner

Listen, there ain’t nothing wrong with a pencil eyeliner for everyday lashline definition — but, if you’d like to rock a more dramatic look this season, I have a solution.

Swap for: Cream eyeliner

To create stronger, more defined eyeliner looks (like a Fashion-Week-worthy cat eye), I’d definitely recommend taking a cream eyeliner in a pot for a spin. Applied with an angle brush, you can get a dramatic look with little to no effort (seriously, it’s absurdly easy. You’ll be shocked). I love this new product, which includes an espresso shade and an inky black in the same pot. Genius.

Shelve it: Setting powder

I used to habitually set my makeup with finishing powder — but, eventually I realized that I wasn’t really gaining anything by fluffing powder all over my face (unless, of course, it was super-humid and I needed some shine control). Many powders just add an extra step to your look, and overly matte skin usually isn’t that flattering.

Swap for: Powder bronzer

A great swap, especially as we head into the fall season and lose our sun kissed glow (sob), is to use a subtle powder bronzer (only one or two shades deeper than your skin tone) to set your makeup. A soft matte bronzer will add dimension and depth to your makeup look, while also ensuring that your makeup look has staying power.

Shelve it: Defining mascara

I know that everyone seems to love mascaras with tiny brushes for their ability to define lashes without clumping. To each their own, but I’d like to suggest that, since mascaras have come a long way in the past few years, it might be worth revisiting volumizing formulas to get more of an impact with fewer coats.

Swap for: Volumizing mascara

I really, really love this mascara. It’s extremely volumizing — I’m amazed every time that I apply it by how much “oomph” I get with literally one flick of the wand — but the formula magically does not clump, at all. The best part: you can add a few more coats later in the evening and it builds beautifully without getting gunky. Love!

Shelve it: Powder eyeshadow

Just like powder blush, there’s nothing wrong with this staple product — but, I will admit that sometimes the whole blending-with-three-brushes thing seems like a bit of a chore.

Swap for: Eyeshadow pencil

Whenever I reach for this magical all-in-one eye pencil, I’m always amazing by how darn easy it is. The formula is super-creamy, so you can easily apply it all over your lid and on lashlines and simply blend with your finger — or, if you’re more refined than I am, you can simply blend with the handy built-in sponge. Done!

Ooh – how fun! Love the introduction to the cheek stain by Yves Saint Laurent! Still can’t master that cat eye though – I’ve tried so many times … womp, womp.

Love this post! I am a huge fan of liquid lipstick. I love the matte look and that it stays all day. I am definitely going to try the eyeshadow pencil. Any recommendations? Thanks for the great make-up tips!
