Every year when the weather warms up, I find myself kind of stumped. It should be easy (in theory) to stash your blowdryer and embrace your natural texture during the spring and summer months, but I’m sure many of you can relate to me when I say that it just ain’t that easy. I’d love to be a wash n go gal, but depending on the weather and my hair’s general mood that day, my hair can turn out frizzy, flat, or just plain weird when I let it do its own thing.

But seriously, the weather is FINALLY gorgeous here in NYC, and the last thing I want to do is spend my time sweating in my tiny bathroom while trying to beat my hair into submission. My solution: texturizers! Texturizing pastes, sprays, and foams are amazing because they add grit, hold, and volume without weight—meaning, that they give the definition and lift that you typically see after a good day at the beach. Any hair texture and any length can benefit from a texturizer; I’ve broken down the deets on some fabulous new offerings to help you ride the wave all summer long.

C-Paste by Original Mineral

Pastes are typically recommended to give texture to short haircuts, but this formula is light enough that it won’t gunk up long locks—plus, it has coconut to add shine and softness.

Playa Endless Summer Spray

So, you might not BE a Venice Beach surfer (we all wish, right?), but you CAN use this beta carotene-infused salt spray, developed by an authentic Venice beach bum who truly knows good hair.

Amika Curl Corps Enhancing Gel

Whether you have bouncing waves or tight coils, this gel will perfectly enhance your swirls with sea buckthorn berry for added shine and moisture.

Ouai Air Dry Foam

Forget what you thought you knew about mousse—this cult-favorite lightweight foam adds definition and hold to waves with zero crunch or stickiness.

Surf Spray by Bumble & Bumble

Bumble and bumble’s Surf Spray is a classic for a reason, but this summer they upped the ante on their classic formula with two new scents: Montauk Dunes, a fresh floral, and Malibu Beach, a coconutty tropical scent.

Verb Sea Texture Spray

Some sea salt sprays can be overly gritty and drying; other formulas can seem to disappear into your hair without doing anything. This spray by Verb is the perfect middle ground: it adds oomph to waves without weighing them down, leaving your locks flexible and touchable.

Bodifying + Fiber Full Sugar High Tousle Spray

Need a lift? If serious volume and body are what you’re after (especially helpful if you’re attempting braids or an updo), check out this spray by OGX, which lifts strands to serious heights using bamboo fibers and sugarcane extract.

I’ve been planning to try Ouai for such a long time but I just haven’t gotten around to it – thanks for sharing the links!
