Little Things :: Queen for a Day

There are about one million things about Austin that I love, but if I’m totally honest, the blazing hot dog days of summer are not one of them. Y’all, it was 106 last week. That sounds like a made-up temperature, but it’s real. So when I’m feeling a little bluesy about being stuck inside (or not really wanting to swim for the tenth day in a row), sometimes I just have to get a little crafty to make being outside a more fun for all of us. When they’re having fun, I’m having fun (perhaps this isn’t always the truth, but for the sake of this post, let’s go with it). When you have little people, and they want to be outside every minute, you have to make the most of it… these days are fleeting, that is the truth.

Thinking through the recent trend in floral headpieces, I wanted to make some sort of headpiece or crown that little ladies could wear and feel both powerful and full of wonder and frill. I think these accomplished just that and couldn’t be simpler to make.

We headed over to Butler Park with some friends and told the girls we had something special for them. The look on their faces when they saw the crowns was priceless. Like: Really? I get to wear that?

They ran, and danced, and hooked arms, and raced.

They showed us their fiercest ‘Wonder-Woman’ faces. And ran some more.

Take a minute this summer to pull a little wonder out of your little people – it might just amaze you what empowering them will also do for you. And I’d love to know, what are your summer secrets for keeping your little ones energized and entertained while they are out of preschool? I’d love to add to my “in case of emergency (or extreme heat)” activity list!
