When I set out to concept the perfect festive element for an upcoming fiesta-themed birthday bash, my rationale was simple: a cake makes a party, and a cake stand makes a cake! With this in mind we designed a cheerful and eye-catching 10″ cake stand made simply using a hat box and assorted ribbon & trim. Vibrant colors along with floral garnish brightly complement a plain chocolate 8″ cake, and are offset by chocolate cupcakes sprinkled with multicolored nonpareil. What you’ll need:

makes a 10″ cake stand

  • 10″ cardboard hat box
  • assortment of ribbon & fabric trim, 1 yard long (go crazy with color and texture!)
  • white acrylic paint & paint brush
  • hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • Mod Podge

1. Turn hat box upside down, and using as many coats as needed, paint the top white until opaque

2. Cut evenly spaced 1″ slits into wider ribbons to create fringe; leave narrower ribbons & trim unaltered

3. Starting from the bottom, hot glue ribbon and trim directly onto the box; we finished it off with a piece of multicolored twine at the very top

4. Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the top and edges of the stand to seal paint and fabric… and your stand is cake-ready!
