Does anyone else remember the excitement of back-to-school as vividly as I do? Butterflies in your stomach, brand new school supplies ready to go, and a crisp wardrobe (or freshly starched uniforms) all in anticipation of a long-awaited reunion with classmates. Now, distinct memories of my elementary school days are faded and fragmented, but the image of my name hand-written on my lunch sack, with a caricature duck forming the capital letter “C”, has stood firm ground in my mind. It’s amazing how little gestures like that one, or notes of encouragement on lunch napkins and sandwiches cut in unexpected shapes, can act an instant pick-me-up from mom. Now that the Fall is upon us, I wanted to create a fun way to send messages to school with your little ones, and these personalized wooden pencils couldn’t have been easier. Follow the jump for instructions, and I’d love to know what sweet things you do for the kiddos when school starts!

  1. Tape off top and bottom of pencils. Spray paint and allow to dry.
  2. Use two pieces of tape to secure the pencils to your crafting surface at the bottom and top of it.
  3. Dip letter stamps into your gold ink pad, and hammer your message into an edge of the pencil. Set aside to dry.
