The One Thing You Need to Live a More Joyful Life

November 16th, 2017

Gratitude. It’s one of those BIG words (like love and peace) that means so much but, thanks to our culture’s overuse, can feel like it’s kind of lost its impact. Which is why I was caught off guard the other day when I read these words in Brené Brown’s incredible book, The Gifts of Imperfection:

Without exception, every person I interviewed who described living a joyful life or who described themselves as joyful, actively practiced gratitude and attributed their joyfulness to their gratitude practice.

Whoa. As I let those words sink in, I realized in a new way that I need to make practicing gratitude a daily priority, even on days when it doesn’t come naturally. Keep reading for a few more eye-openers about the link between joy and gratitude from Brown’s book, plus a few practical ways to make it your new habit today.

    Hello Camille,
Do you know about The Magic book (from The Secret series) ? It may be almost a year ago that I read it and did the exercises in it. It was such a great thing to do, a great experience and a practical way to see how well it works to be grateful. I’m thinking about restarting some gratitude practices myself these days. And Christmas are an amazing time to do so!
    Thank you for sharing!

This makes such perfect sense and is a wonderful reminder. I am currently sitting at home, working in my bedroom after leaving the office early because I wasn’t well. I woke up this morning with a feeling of dread and anxiety (which I struggle with) and it took over. Practicing gratitude and being present makes a huge difference. Most of my anxiety is from what ifs or the fear of scarcity. Thank you for sharing this today.

Love this post I think this is so important to remember! I try to write 3 things i’m grateful for whenever I journal and honestly it helps boost my mood massively. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the negatives and forget all the great things we’ve been given.

I close my eyes at bedtime and think of 3 things I am grateful for and very often that list goes beyond 3. I’ve done the gratitude journal and that is good too. For a couple of years my sister and I would text each other daily and write 3 things we were grateful for or that brought us joy that day . And last but not least just tell those who you are grateful for to their face. So much and so many ways to be grateful…keep it going!

I recently started keeping a 5-year gratitude journal that I can look back at what I was grateful for each day for 5 years straight! It’s been life-changing to say the least 🙂

Every day as my husband and I settle in for the evening, we toast each other and share what was the best part of the day. It reminds us of how much we have and how lucky we are.

For the past ten-ish years I rise early every morning to let the dogs out, brew coffee and journal. My journal is solely used to chronicle five things that I am grateful for each day. Some profound; my husbands by-pass surgery was a success, or mundane; the aroma of croissants baking in the oven. No matter what appears, it is a grand way to start my day with a list to remind me of the abundance that surrounds each of my days. And at this moment, I am grateful for that ritual.
