Pretty Simple :: Beachy Waves

Beachy Waves Tutorial by Martha Lynn Kale | photos by Cory Ryan for Camille Styles

These days, it feels like I see women flaunting gorgeous, beachy waves everywhere I turn… the natural bounce and slightly straight ends make it look like they’ve spent the day walking the beaches of somewhere fabulous. Martha Lynn here, and I’m already dreaming of warm weather and sand between my toes, and nothing gives me that vacay-feeling quite like having vacation hair. This look is hands down the most requested style from my clients and they’re all dying to know how to recreate it at home — the good news is that it’s super easy to do on yourself! ¬†Though it may be a little early for sundresses and flip flops, this technique is simple and versatile enough to don every day…

  1. Create a vertical section of hair and curl (referring to this curling tutorial). When pulling the curling iron down, leave the end of the section out.
  2. Repeat, working your way around your head. With each section, curl the hair in opposite directions, alternating between sections curled toward your face and sections curled toward the back of your head.
  3. Run fingers through your hair to separate curls.
  4. Curl small sections around the crown in alternating directions.
  5. Separate curls and spray all over.

    Looks great! If only I was a little better and maneuvering a curling iron!

      The key is to use your other hand to hold the tip to give yourself more control! Good luck ;-)

      I like Living Proof Hold Flexible hairspray…it will look out humidity and keep those curls perfect! Plus it smells amazing!

    I love the soft wavy look. I can pull it off with ceramic irons. I will have to try it with curlers. What size barrel did you use? My hair is a bit past my shoulders.

    I love this look! Lately I’ve been using my curling wand to get beachy waves, but as soon as I step outside into the Chicago wind they get ruined :(

    Well, since I have absolutely and helplessly straight hair, I’m still struggling to achieve this look! Martha Lynn, could you maybe give me a tip on good product to give my hair a little bit of structure? Thank you!

      Ivana, I actually have really fine hair that can be hard to style too, and one thing that I sometimes do is spray dry shampoo all throughout the roots to kind of “rough it up” and give the style something to hold onto, and then I mist my entire hair with a light hold hairspray before I even start with the curling iron. I also give it another little mist of spray as I finish each section of hair. I like Oscar Blandi’s dry shampoo best… Gives me tons of volume.

        Thank you so much for sharing your tips, Camille! I’ve been struggling with fine hair forever, and I’m definitely going to try your technique. I guess the dry shampoo could be the element that’s missing in my routine :) Thanks!

          Camille nailed it with the tips! The only thing I would add is try a smaller barrel. We used a 1 inch on Camille here. They fall a lot so you have to overshoot the curl size so it’s perfect!

    If you use a “leave in conditioner”, it will also help to keep your ends from frizzing.

    My hair is a little above my shoulders. I love this and have wanted to try it. Any suggestions for my length(shortness) of hair?
