Here’s a real fashion secret: if you don’t have enough cash for a new dress this month, create a fresh look with your hair or makeup. We consulted with makeup artist Avery Allen at Sabia Salon to learn how to create a glamorous nighttime eye that would look great with our favorite old L.B.D. “For this look, I created a soft smokey eye that is very wearable and an easy transition from day to night. The color palette is neutral enough to go with any outfit or lip color. This might not be an everyday look, but it’s a great way to accentuate your eyes when dressing up for a special occasion!” Read on to discover Avery’s technique for this fun party-ready look:
- Apply an eye shadow primer all over the lid ad up to the brow, like NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
- Apply a mid-tone eye shadow all over the lid up to the crease, I used MAC eye shadow in Satin Taupe
- Blend a matte brown eye shadow into the crease, like Buck from Urban Decay
- To darken the look, apply a darker shadow in the outer corner of the eye, I used Shadowy Lady by MAC
- Line the eyes with a black gel liner that lasts, like Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner
- For a soft effect, line all along the bottom lash line with the crease color eye shadow using a flat liner brush
- Using the same flat liner brush, add the darker eye shadow to the bottom outer half of the lash line
- Curl lashes and add a couple coats of mascara, Shiseido Lash Curler
- To add dimension, dust a shimmery eye shadow in the center of the lid, like Kitten by Stila
AVERY’S PRO TIP:
To rock this look during the day, reach for matte brown shadows and reserve the shimmer for night time. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different color palettes at night, like rich metallics or varying shades of plum.
