If you’re an Austinite reading this, chances are you’ve already thought to yourself (or maybe exclaimed out loud), “I love that place!” In the three years since it opened, Lick Ice Creams has made a name for itself in town for being unlike any other, and during these dog days of summer we can’t get enough of the stuff. Recently, a few of us headed out to their South Austin shop to… well, eat some ice cream! It was the perfect way to take a break from the workday, and since our friend Molly Winters came along to photograph the trip, we thought we’d invite you to indulge with us…

Co-founders (and real life couple!) Anthony and Chad met in New York in 2005, and after bonding over their small-town backgrounds and love for fresh ingredients, opened Lick in 2011. Simply put, they use only the purest ingredients in making their unique, utterly delicious ice cream flavors.

Committing to a single scoop is no simple feat. Between the three of us, we tasted just about every single flavor offered, each one better than the last.

Anthony was a patient man.

Pictured here, from the top down:

1. Pecans and Cream
2. Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil and Sea Salt
3. Caramel Salt Lick
4. Blueberry Vegan Vanilla
5. Hill Country Honey and Vanilla Bean
6. Milk Chocolate

Let’s take a moment to talk about the smell: If you happen to stumble into Lick around opening time, your senses will be treated to a little piece of heaven in the form of aromatic waffle cones, freshly made in-house from scratch. Breathe it in, folks.

We all cheers for ice cream!

Camille went with two scoops of Roasted Beet and Fresh Mint, one of Lick’s everyday flavors.

Since South Austin is brimming with color and personality, we couldn’t help but fence-hop for different photo backdrops. This sunny yellow perfectly captured the cheery moods we were in.

Two of my favorite foods unite in this flavor: Coconut and Avocado Curd. If you need me, I’ll be daydreaming about this stuff.

And Jennifer went dairy-free with two scoops of the insanely good Blueberry Vegan Vanilla.

The Lick team will soon be taking their talents to a second location in San Antonio. But don’t expect one to open near you if you’re out-of-state… Anthony’s thoughts on expanding outside of Texas: “To remain truly honest, you have to stay small.”

Feeling inspired, Camille raided the Lick freezer for some pints of her favorite flavors and started brainstorming a summer dessert that incorporates them all…

Lo and behold, this layered beauty! Stop by later today for the recipe, and if you haven’t already, be sure find time to stop by Lick for some mouthwatering summer treats.

This place sounds amazing! Sorry to hear they won’t be opening up on Long Island, NY. But I think the pecan and cream flavor might call for a trip to Austin!
