Editors’ Essentials :: Sarah

By Jenn Rose Smith
Editors' Essentials with Sarah Yates | Camille Styles

Girl crush. Lifestyle envy. Insane style. All of these hashtags and more apply to the uber-talented Sarah Yates, the chef/photographer behind the super foodie column here on the blog. Her cool minimalist California style makes her blog, A House in the Hills, one of our absolute favorites to read. Today she’s breaking down her essentials for us, and we’re ready to take notes:

Oversized sunnies.
I never leave the house without a pair of sunglasses. My favorite is this pair by Karen Walker, I wear them non-stop!

Converse.
There’s no other shoe I’d rather run errands in than a pair of crisp white Converse! They’re comfortable while still being stylish, versatile, and classic. I’m a lifer.

Lemons.
I know this one may seem random but I use lemons in my kitchen constantly! They’re my favorite quick, healthy and delicious way to add flavor to whatever I’m whipping up.

A quiet corner to meditate.
I may be slacking a bit on my yoga but I’ve managed to stick to meditation practice. Putting in the 20 minutes two times a day makes a world of difference, I can feel the stress just slipping away!

The perfect bag that carries all.
I think this may be on everyone’s list? I’m currently coveting this one.

A good book.
I am usually midway through half a dozen books at a time, but my favorite is having one that I can’t put down. I’m currently reading The Year of Magical Thinking and it’s overshadowing the four others on my nightstand!

Instagram.
I have a slight obsession with Instagram. It’s so fun to scroll through my feed and see what friends are up to, and I love looking back through my past photos to bring back memories of past fun! (You can find me here.)

Yoga mat.
I’ve been slacking on my yoga practice but I still consider a yoga mat to be one of my essentials! The time I spend on my mat gets my head straight, helps me feel my best and usually ends up being some of the most valuable time spent in my day.

Passport.
Traveling is my absolute favorite thing to do, so of course a passport is high on my must-have list. I also have to confess, I get a silly little bit of satisfaction from having mine stamped. And I love to look back through it and remember my past adventures!

Le Creuset dutch oven.
Our Le Creuset dutch oven is probably the most used and loved item in our kitchen. It’s the perfect pot to cook up large pots of soup or chili. I wouldn’t trade it!

My perfect watch.
My arm feels bare when I forget my watch and I catch myself checking my wrist awkwardly for the time at least five times a day. For that reason this watch is on my must-have list!

A black pencil skirt.
I recently discovered something I think a lot of women have known for years- a black pencil skirt is a wardrobe staple. It’s so versatile and works a million and one ways!

sarah i feel like you may be my soulmate. i have many times said that i could write a cookbook based on cooking with lemons, i put them in EVERYTHING. and i totally get you on getting the passport stamps…i almost cried last time we were in italy and didn’t get our passports stamped, i actually considered going through customs again to see if they would restamp for me. thankfully my boyfriend talked some sense into me 🙂
