Rethinking Holiday Decor

There are few things in life that can elicit the level of excitement and nostalgia that holiday decorations can. Of course I still get those giddy feelings when I see a beautifully lit tree and sentimental ornaments, but living in a small space now I can’t help but think “yes, but what about storing them the rest of the year?” Closet space is prized real estate in my home so I have to be very thoughtful about what I bring in, especially when it comes to seasonal decor. Kate Arends of Wit & Delight recommends choosing “holiday items that already fit with your decor,” as she did in here in her living room. You have a color palette and distinct design sensibility that already appeals to you, why diverge from it just for the holidays? 

Mercury Lights – As a rule of thumb, search for decor that you’d be happy to display in your home year-round – like these mercury bulbs. They’re perfect to string along the mantle all winter, but would also add ambient lighting to your bedroom for the rest of the year.

Citrus Wreath – This mix of orange slices and eucalyptus wreath is a refreshing take on the traditional fir, and is also fitting for the kitchen or dining room.

Knit Throw – This chunky knit is the ultimate cozy textile. Drape it over an armchair in the living room, layer it at the foot of the bed, or wear it around the house – that’s what I would do.

Coffee Table – This petite coffee table is really more like a stand for your hot cocoa, egg nog, or milk and cookies.

Beeswax Candles – Yellow beeswax candles add warmth to the neutral color palette in the inspiration photo, and this DIY set would also make a great gift.

Ceramic Trees – I don’t know about you, but I would keep these ceramic trees out all year long.

Safari Chair – This safari chair is just begging for a lambswool rug and a knit throw pillow to complete it.

Wooden Almonds – Baskets of pinecones, nuts and firewood are one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to add a seasonal touch.
