how to style wide leg pants

ed. note: Next up in our new Pulling It Off series? Stylist Taylor Jarrett shows me that I really can kick my skinny jeans habit to the curb and embrace wide leg pants in my wardrobe — even the trickier cropped version! Click through for Taylor’s tips on making a pair your chicest piece this fall…

Perfect for dressing up or wearing casually, wide leg trousers are an absolute must-have in your fall wardrobe this year. I prefer a minimalist approach when styling this piece — the overall look should be easy and chic. Whether you go vintage or modern, you’ll know when you find the perfect pair (and so will everyone else.)

When putting together this look, I went for a color palette that says “fall” in materials that are cool enough for the still-warm days in Austin. It’s the perfect versatile look for a workday that flows right into happy hour.

Tip #1: Try on two sizes

When shopping for wide leg pants, try on both your usual size as well as a size up for the more relaxed look that feels right this fall. Whatever your natural shape might be, there’s no better way to enhance it than with the right fit.

Tip #2: Tuck the top or go cropped

Show off the flattering waistline of your wide-legs by tucking in a breezy top for a nipped-in waist, or create a similar line with a silky or structured crop top.

Tip #3: Try Kamm pants

There’s no doubt about it – designer Jesse Kamm created the hottest pants of summer, and now I can’t get enough of her signature sailor pants in this tobacco shade for fall. A perfect fit and color palette, these pants are a staple for the trendy minimalist closet this fall. Look for crops with a similar shape, semi wide leg crop, and seamless structure — perfect for showing off just a glimpse of a fading summer tan.

Tip #4: Make it personal

Whether opting for a laid-back look with army-green military fatigues, or an elevated high fashion look with a pair of 70’s inspired flared jeans, wide legs can be customized with lots of fun details. Think chain-stitching and patchwork for repairing a tear, or try wearing a rope belt like this one for an easy way to add a chic-without-trying-too-hard touch to the overall look.

Tip #5: Show off the shoe

Wide leg pants provide the perfect opportunity to show off your new fall kicks: jump into a pair of MNZ heels or Common Project sneakers to explore the different options that these wide-legs provide — and make a major statement in the process!
