The number one sign that fall has arrived? (and no, I’m not talking about pumpkin spice lattés.) The arrival of a beautiful new pair of boots on my front porch, and an absolute craving to start wearing them despite the still 90-degree temps here in Austin. I’ve always been a boot girl; once October rolls around, I pretty much live in them until spring. My current collection ranges from black leather booties to suede knee-highs to worn-in cowboys, and this year, these drool-worthy Stuart Weitzman over-the-knee Lowland boots were tip top of my list and the first addition I made to my fall wardrobe. I took them out for a spin around town in two different winter white-inspired looks. Click through to see how I wore them!

I’ve got to admit that the toughest challenge to pulling off over-the-knee boots is to avoid channeling (how shall I put this) a “Pretty Woman” vibe. Our always in-the-know stylist Taylor Jarrett put together two looks in my favorite winter white palette that prove that over-the-knee boots can be chic and sophisticated — and he’s also sharing a few of his expert tips on making them a staple in our wardrobes all season long.
For the first look, I pulled on a mini that wasn’t too mini, showing just a hint of skin above the boot. We paired it with a simple ivory tunic for a loose silhouette on top that perfectly balanced the sleek lines of the boots.
Taylor’s first tip: find the perfect hue.
With fall’s arrival, I get inspired by the natural shades of the season. Since Camille loves a monochrome palette in her outfits, either this Walnut Suede shade or the Londra Gray will add a rich, earthy tone to any look, and are versatile enough to be worn for many seasons to come.

The two main decisions to make when shopping for over-the-knee boots are shaft length and heel height. Just as with clothes, the key is to find the combination that’s most flattering to your individual body type. For shorter ladies, I’d choose a high-heeled boot that hits right above the knee, which will help elongate the legs and give you space to play with different bottoms that complement the boots. Taller girls can experiment a bit more with flat boots and a higher shaft since they’ll have a bit more leg room to play with.
For the second look, I pulled on a piece that was a bit more form-fitting up top, although the architectural cut of the blouson top and voluminous sleeves kept the look from feeling overly revealing.
Sculptural gold jewelry added polish to an otherwise minimalist look, and I love the way that the boots made it all feel relaxed and a little bohemian.
Taylor’s last piece of advice for pulling off a look like this one?
Pairing the right pieces up top is just as important as nailing the shape and height of the boot down low. You’ll want to show at least a small bit of leg when wearing over-the-knee boots so as not to feel like you’re drowning in too much material. For a comfy on-the-go look, I love a mini skirt such as the one pictured above, layered with a comfy oversized sweater or fitted faux neck shirt. For a bit more polish, try the boots with a short fitted dress — this is when your over-the-knee boots will really shine and will have the added bonus of keeping you warm this fall!
