Especially as I hit my late twenties, and now thirty, my focus has shifted towards building a classic wardrobe of pieces that I love, that I can wear for years, and that I know I’ll look and feel great in. And that was the inspiration behind our recently-launched Essential Pieces series that’s all about the way I really dress — not for instagram or for a styled shoot, but for real life when I’m meeting a friend for lunch, picking Phoebe up from preschool, or headed out for date night.
The way it works is that I do the digging to find what I think is the best version out there right now (taking into consideration fit, material, quality, and value for the price), then show how I’m styling it. The goal is that, at the end of each season, I’ll have invested in a few beautiful pieces that will become part of my wardrobe for years to come. For today’s installment, I set my sites on finding the perfect pair of black jeans.
Can you believe that I’ve actually never owned a pair of black jeans before? Crazy, I know, especially considering that I’ve always been a major denim girl and wear dark blues most days of the week during the fall and winter. I think I’d always associated black jeans with a rocker look (which isn’t really me), and only recently realized that, when styled differently, they can look sophisticated, sleek, and paired with a red lip and a little bedhead, perfectly capture that French woman je ne sais quoi.

For starter’s, they’re made from the brand’s “power stretch” denim which holds you in, smoothes you out, and provides a sleek silhouette under even the thinnest silky tops. They’re a bit more high-waisted which feels modern, timeless, and grown-up. So far, I’ve worn them with a blazer and heels like I did here, as well as a t-shirt and sneakers for a casual weekend look, and both footwear choices worked perfectly with the jeans.
