Back to the Beach

“There’s not much better than a baby on a beach, is there?” It was one of those honest observations you make when you’re entirely comfortable with your significant other. We were lying underneath a palapa in Mexico, watching a mother lead her child along the shore. The toddler was experiencing the sea for the first time — the sand, the shells, the moving tide. After that, it became a catchphrase between us – any time we were feeling totally relaxed and content, we were “as happy as a baby on a beach”. We went back to the beach over and over during that year, and sometimes I would let myself imagine that we lived there. We’d have a little house with white washed walls and an open kitchen. We’d build campfires at night and light candles and eat at a table outside with our feet in the sand. Oh, and we’d have our own toddler to walk along the shore. For now, we’re soaking up the fun city life in Austin… but in the back of my mind, within my soul, I’m always trying to figure out how to get back to the beach.
