How to Makeover an Antique

Consider this post to be my official apology to anyone who wanted to get together last March. It’s not that I didn’t want to hang out, I just had a standing reservation with this handsome fellow every evening and weekend during that time. You see, after weeks of ogling this gorgeous — though at the time, totally neglected — antique armoire on Craigslist, I took on my first ever heavy duty restoration project.

Dating back to the 1880’s and made of sturdy quarter-sawn oak, I couldn’t get over the piece’s beautiful, elegant shape. I enlisted the help of a good friend and woodworker, Hunter Wagner, to mentor me through the process, and in the end, couldn’t have been happier with the outcome. Knowing that this piece was such a labor of love makes me treasure it ten times more than something purchased from a big box retailer, and since it’s already stood the test of time, I have no doubt I’ll continue it in my enjoy for the rest of my life (though I’ve already ditched the temporary wallpaper!). Scroll down for the before and after photos, and be sure to hop over to HGTV.com for the step-by-step instructions.
