While summer may be the peak of wedding season, invitations seem to roll in all year long—each one with its own dress code, theme, and location to consider. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love any excuse to shop for a new dress. But during certain seasons of life, finding the perfect wedding guest outfit can start to feel like a full-time job. And with a calendar full of celebrations, who really has the time?

To take the guesswork out of wedding guest dressing, I’ve curated a wedding guest outfit guide for every kind of celebration—from rustic to traditional, garden to destination. And while keeping a few timeless options on hand that you can rewear and restyle is always a good idea, themed weddings can be a fun opportunity to step outside of your usual style and embrace something new. Each and every one of these selections are thoughtfully chosen to help you look and feel your best, no matter where your loved ones are saying “I do.”

Coastal Celebration

With the ocean breeze and a golden-hour backdrop, coastal weddings call for looks that feel relaxed yet refined. While the beach is my happy place, a few outfit logistics are important to keep in mind when shopping. Opt for sand-friendly shoes—flat sandals or short heels that you can kick off as needed. The ocean humidity can be real, so try to avoid clingy silks or anything that easily shows sweat. Opt for flowy fabrics in sunset-inspired tones: soft corals, sea foam greens, sky blues, and buttery yellows. Accessorize with natural textures like raffia, shells, and woven details that feel both effortless and perfectly on theme.

Garden Gathering

Romantic and full of flowers, a garden wedding is the ideal setting to embrace florals, pastels, and soft silhouettes. Look for wedding guest outfits that feature subtle prints and delicate details that complement the setting without stealing the spotlight. Since these ceremonies often take place on the grass, skip the stilettos and reach for block heels or flats. Think fresh, polished, and just whimsical enough. If Daphne Bridgerton would wear it, then you’re doing something right.

Mountain Moment

Set on scenic overlooks surrounded by trees, mountain weddings are all about leaning into the beauty of the landscape. Look for rich, earthy tones like forest green, golden yellow, and deep chocolate browns—and don’t shy away from on-theme textures like suede, wool, and leather.

A wide-brim hat or a pair of chic boots can add the right amount of personality to any wedding guest outfit too—just be sure the dress code allows. And as the sun sets, temperatures tend to drop quickly, so bring a wrap or opt for a dress with sleeves to stay comfortable without compromising style.

Timeless Traditional

Classic, elegant, and often held in a church or formal venue, this wedding style calls for refined silhouettes and sophisticated touches. Jewel tones are always a safe bet, especially when paired with minimal but meaningful accessories—pearl studs, a pointed heel, and a structured clutch go a long way. Since churches can be a bit cool inside, bring a light shawl or wrap that adds warmth without overpowering your outfit. When in doubt, timeless always wins.

Rustic Romantic

As a Texas girl, I’ll always have a soft spot for rustic weddings—whether it’s a barn, a vineyard, or a ranch. This theme blends laid-back charm with thoughtful styling, inviting you to choose wedding guest outfits with both personality and polish. Flowy dresses with movement pair perfectly with accessories that fit the theme—a wide leather belt, heirloom turquoise, or a great pair of boots. And yes, this is the moment for you or your partner to bring out the cowboy hat! It’s about leaning into the setting in a way that feels thoughtful, not costume-y.
