If you’re decorating a nursery for the first time, it can be easy to be overwhelmed by all of the new decisions to be made. Serena Dugan, a mother of two and the chief creative officer of Serena and Lily, says “the hardest thing is that new parents feel restricted by what’s ‘functional’ because it’s all so new and intimidating. So they allow themselves to be told what’s appropriate for the nursery, rather than let their own aesthetic taste and intuition guide them. Once they figure out what’s truly essential for a functional nursery, creating one that’s aesthetically pleasing is easy.” I love that this nursery isn’t restricted by traditional pastel colors or themes – I wouldn’t have thought black walls could work so well! It’s a unique look that can grow up with the child.

Sheep mobile – Have you heard of the Valais Blacknose sheep? Quite possibly the cutest animal in the world, right up there with this mini sheep mobile.
Crib – The rattan crib in the inspiration photo is a major statement piece, and as luck would have it, it’s vintage. This modern sculptural crib is so unique, and can also be converted into a bassinet.
Wallpaper – This unique wallpaper sets the tone for the entire space. It is definitely a splurge, but you can limit the wallpaper to just one wall or one corner and paint the rest of the walls black. Another option is to add vinyl wall stickers in the same print for a smaller dose.
Ceiling light – There are many accent colors to choose from with this wallpaper, which makes it easy to incorporate your favorite into the rest of the room. The forest green of this retro pendant is a soothing, peaceful color that’s perfect for a nursery.
Rocking horse – This Scandinavian rattan rocker mirrors the vintage rattan rocker in the inspiration photo. There are so many adorable rockers out there (like this sheep and this bear) that it was hard to choose just one!
Pillow – When you’re working with an intricately printed wallpaper it can be challenging to find other prints that won’t clash. When in doubt mix in simple, clean prints in neutral colors like this reversible graphic pillow.
Shaggy ottoman – An ottoman is probably the most versatile piece you can own, and I like that this shaggy one also feels like a giant stuffed toy.
Black leather chair – I picked this tip up from Camille’s nursery design, having one piece of furniture that isn’t specifically designed for a nursery gives the whole room a “grown up” style statement.
