I turn 35 next month, and so far it’s been true that with every passing year, I never want to go back and actually be a younger version of myself again. Sure, the lightening-fast metabolism and flawless skin of my twenties had its perks, but re-reading old blog posts and journal entries is a tangible reminder of the wiser, kinder, more present person I’ve become on my journey, and every day I’m learning to love the person that I am right now a little bit more.
When I dig down and think about which moments of my life have been most transformative, it’s apparent that real growth is almost always preceded by discomfort. It’s important to look back at those moments, even the painful ones, to see how far we’ve come.
The miscarriage, the car accident, the day that I realized I’d been so busy hustling through the previous year that I barely remembered it. It sounds cliché, but those were the moments that grew me into the person I am today, and I’m grateful for them. Although I wouldn’t necessarily go back and choose to experience those trials again, I can’t imagine trading them in for something that felt easier at the time but didn’t push me to the next phase of who I was becoming.
This month on Camille Styles, we’re looking at growth in its many forms, from developing a truly unique personal style to cultivating your green thumb and filling your home with spring’s prettiest plants. We’re interviewing tastemakers like Lauren Scruggs Kennedy and Candice Kumai, two women who have faced adversity and come out stronger on the other side (just one of the reasons I deeply admire them.) And most of all, we’re embracing “progress not perfection” as our goal in everything we do. We want our stories this month to serve as a reminder that you’re perfectly imperfect, and wherever you are on your own personal journey is exactly where you’re supposed to be.
