I’ve made many cheeseboards, and I’ve learned quite a few things about what components are ultimate crowd pleasers. After all, the best part of a cheeseboard is all the flavor combinations and textures that combine to make the perfect bite. Organizing items with small bowls and plates adds texture and makes clean up easier. Slice your cheese and fruits for easy serving. A variety of textures and flavors in your cheeses is always the way to go. Pick a general theme or flavor profile to make pairings easier. But also—just have fun with it! A cheeseboard is a centerpiece, and the more creative you get, the more fun it is.

There’s a reason that cheeseboards are the best trick in my entertaining toolkit. They’re completely customizable, you can use ingredients you already have on hand, and so much of it can be prepped in advance. This holiday season, I’m leaning on one of my favorite recipes (done three different ways) to elevate my cheeseboards: chutney.

Why Chutney Is the Secret to the Perfect Holiday Board

While I love a cheeseboard that uses a little fig jam or orange marmalade, there’s something extra delicious about a chutney. First, while similar in textures, a chutney will utilize some form of vinegar or acid, making it less sweet than a jam. I find that with a rich selection of cheeses, having something slightly acidic gives the perfect bite to cut through the richness.

I have a few favorite chutney recipes that pair well with a great selection of cheeses, crackers, nuts, and other accoutrements. For a spicy cranberry chutney, I love pairing a sharp cheddar and crisp cracker. For a savory onion chutney, a rich and creamy brie cheese and sliced baguette is unbeatable. And for a warm apple chutney, caramelized pecans and seedy crackers are the perfect bite. Pair with ingredients you have and love, and I promise your holiday gatherings will be perfect.
