Michelle Adams wrote in HouseBeautiful that she “spent most of my 20s as a magazine editor, photographing stylish spaces in New York City and around the world for Domino and Lonny.com. And go figure: My personal style was all over the map.” I for one have loved that about her style, and have gotten so much inspiration watching Michelle’s homes evolve. But what’s been even more fun is seeing familiar pieces pop up in different rooms, reinterpreted in new ways. I’ve seen her use the same floral print curtains in her dining room and as a DIY canopy for her bed. With versatile pieces and a fresh eye, you can reinvent your home over and over again
Stripes – As you may have found in your wardrobe, stripes go with everything. Much like a Breton shirt, striped upholstery makes the perfect base for mixing and matching patterns, no matter how many times you decide to redesign a room.
Abstract prints – The bold, abstract shapes on these embroidered pillows and this framed print work just as well with leopard print as they do with minimal neutrals. Plus, they’re light and easy enough to move to a new setting for a quick, 5-minute makeover.
Lamp – How versatile can leopard print lamps and benches really be? Take a look at Michelle’s apartment bedroom in 2013 to see for yourself. A simple change of lampshade can make a big impact, especially with a simple navy base like the one above.
Bar cart – Bar carts are one of the most versatile pieces of furniture. You can literally roll them from room to room to meet all sorts of functions, from bedside table to outdoor drinks station when entertaining.
Indigo throws – These throws are listed on General Store as a perfect light-weight throw, picnic blanket, or even a shawl. Add to that that you can throw them over the end of the bed for a new look that’s much easier than changing your duvet cover.
Hotel shams – Classic hotel sheets and shams will always create a clean base for your bedding, especially if you’re the type of person who likes to rotate all of your throw pillows and blankets on the regular. The headboard, art, rug, pillows and accessories are all different in this iteration of Michelle’s guest room, but those sheets still stay the same.
Bench – This seriously impressive Ikea hack can be made over again and again with new fabric and a staple gun. But even if you don’t want to go through the trouble of reupholstering, this black and white dot print pretty much goes with everything.
