It may be 92 degrees with a humidity of 84% outside here in Austin, and yet I still ambitiously wore my fall boots to work today only to regret that decision by lunch time. For now I’m getting into the fall spirit from inside my air conditioned home. I recently hung a large photo print of a snow capped mountain enveloped in fog and lit a few seasonal candles, and I can already feel the difference. Faux fall views – If you don’t see red and orange foliage when you look out your window, then fake it by hanging artwork with autumnal landscapes and colors. If you’ve taken any photos on your travels to cooler climates, print and frame one to remind you of what it felt like to be cold.
Candlesticks – I’ve gone through my fair share of pumpkin, cinnamon and spiced rum candles, but there is something that feels a little bit fancy about lighting actual candlesticks. And the black candlesticks are especially appropriate for this time of year.
Blanket ladder – Ladders are one of those pieces that you can move around your home and find all sorts of uses for. You can hang scarves or jewelry from them in your bedroom or closet, use them as a towel rack in the bathroom, or in the cooler months you can lean one against the living room wall to hang warm blankets and quilts on. This is one of those items you can find fairly easily at an antique mall or if you get lucky at a yard sale.
Warm textures – Right now it’s too warm to even think about wearing velvet, but you can at least start incorporating some cozy textures like faux fur, velvet and wool throws and pillows into your home.
Ambient light – Is there anything cozier than curling up with a book on a cloudy day? I think the ambient light of a reading lamp and muted daylight definitely add to the atmosphere, and you can do the same by using table lamps instead of overhead lights.
