Okay, so maybe a scented candle isn’t the most original gift, but c’mon: have you ever met a person who didn’t love receiving one? Especially when said candle has the coolest packaging, is made of clean-burning soy wax, and lasts for 60 (or more) hours. We polled our beauty council members to find out which scented candle they can’t live without, and many of their picks check all boxes. Personally, I burn one of my favorites every single day — there’s no easier way to add a sense of luxury to day-to-day life, whether it’s an invigorating citrus on my desk while I work or relaxing lavender on the bedside table while I read at night. Do you think of beautifully-scented candles as extravagances… or essentials? Why not just embrace the fact that they can be both, then go ahead and scoop up a holiday gift or two for yourself. And, we’d love to hear in the comments what scented candle tops your list!

This candle was inspired by the beautiful wood floors of Versailles — it’s warm and woody and can fill a room even when it isn’t lit. A few years ago, I visited Versailles and actually got on my hands and knees to smell the floors, and I can confirm that the candle is spot-on.

Diptyque Baies

Lately I’ve been really into using incense and burning white sage to replace my candles, but I cannot help it I’ve been obsessed with this candle for years.

Archipelago Botanicals Bamboo Teak Signature Soy Wax Candle

Right now I’m really loving anything woodsy!

They burn this at The Apartment by The Line, which is one of the chicest stores around. This is where I fell in love with the candle and now by them in bulk.

I’ve never met a candle that scents an entire room quite like this one — the heady blend of amber, spices, and sandalwood instantly makes your space feel laid-back and a bit bohemian, like you’ve got a stylish secret all your own.

Cold Spring Apothecary Peony Rosemary LTD Candle

I scoop one of these up every time I make a trip upstate, and the little one lasts forever!

Tyler Candle Company in Diva

This candle smells just like Thierry Mugler Angel. I have the laundry detergent too. I’m obsessed.

Izola

Full disclosure: this is my husband’s company, but I’ve truly never found candles that I like more than these single-note wonders. I’m all about Jasmin or Magnolia for summer, and Rosemary or Sandalwood for the cooler months.

PF Candle Co. Neroli & Eucalyptus Soy Candle

This clean-burning candle smells like California with it’s abundant citrus and eucalyptus, and the minimalist apothecary-style jar is just plain cool. Also, it’s much more affordable than most other candles of its caliber!

I love diptyque, and feu du bois and baies are two of my favourites. Especially feu du bois because it reminds me of home and our log fire.

My favorite is the “seeking balance” series from Root Candles, a family-owned company in Medina, Ohio. They used to be available at Whole Foods and Bed Bath & Beyond, but I no longer see them there. They do have their own website for online orders, and Amazon carries them as well. They are the best, at $20! The scents are amazing and never headache-inducing for me (e.g. lavender geranium, basil and lime, etc). I don’t think they last 60 hours like some candles do – I never really counted – BUT the best part is that they always burn evenly for me due to the wide, wooden wick. No trimming necessary. I’ve been frustrated with some of the more expensive “luxe” candles that don’t burn evenly despite following instructions about initial burn time and my constant trimming of the wick to 1/4 inch before every burn – ending up with $ worth left of wax at the bottom of the jar which I then have to put extra effort into to re-purpose. Not with Root Candles (I promise I’m not affiliated with them in any way – just a satisfied customer!). I feel like I divulged a best kept secret here 😉

My absolute favourite candle company is Coal & Canary. All their scents are amazing and their packaging is SO fun. Their newest candle, aptly named ‘Champagne Suits & Birthday Suits’ is coming out just in time for Valentine’s Day! I’m so excited to order it!
